Saylar Jo McGrew, 57, passed away on August 5, 2026 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio. Saylar was born on July 13, 1969 in Da Nang, Vietnam. She was the adopted daughter of the late Charles E. & Deon J. McGrew. At only 9 days old, Saylar was welcomed by her new family, parents Charles & Deon along with brothers Baxter and Bradley in Fontana, CA, from war-torn Vietnam. Saylar was nurtured and cared for by her new family.
Saylar graduated from Crater High School in Central Point, Oregon before obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and becoming a RN. Saylar became known as “Nurse Saylar” because of her dedication to nursing. She worked as a RN in correctional facilities in Pittsburgh, PA, for CynaMed Healthcare Staffing Solutions and most importantly for many years as a Hospice nurse, caring for those at the end of their journey in life. “Nurse Saylar” lived up to her nickname for her endless help to those in need by answering their medical questions, providing medical information and compassionate care. She extended her nursing beyond her job duties to provide care for both of her parents in their elderly years.
Saylar became severely ill in the past couple months and became hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, her condition was already too critical for the doctors to reverse. She will always be remembered for her compassion and care for others and her family was blessed having “Nurse Saylar.”
Beyond nursing, Saylar had a love for life. She found companionship with Alan Hughes and although she had a fear of flying, the two of them enjoyed traveling to Saudi Arabia, England and Hawaii as well as to many music concerts across the country. She also had a deep love for animals including her horse growing up to her best kitty companion today, Vivian Lee. Saylar enjoyed many sports and especially cheering on her favorite teams, the Denver Broncos and LA Dodgers.
Saylar also had deep faith and was a member of Boundary Road Church in Edison, Ohio where she made many close friends.
Saylar is survived by her brothers Bradley W. & Baxter W. McGrew; sons Sterling A. McGrew & Nolan M. Burchfield; companion Alan Hughes; kitty Vivian Lee and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family & friends.
Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 12 p.m. Burial at Unionport Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Saylar’s honor to: Boundary Road Church, 3216 Twp Rd 75, Edison, Ohio 43320-9737.
