Grief Support in the Ohio Valley

Grief is not a problem to solve. It is the cost of loving someone, and it looks different for everyone. Our care for your family does not end when the service does, and you are always welcome to call us.

Understanding grief

What You May Feel

  • Waves, not stages

Grief often comes and goes. A song, a smell or an anniversary can bring it back when you least expect it. That is normal.

  • Many feelings at once

Sadness, anger, relief, guilt and numbness can all show up, sometimes in the same hour.

  • Your own pace

There is no schedule for grief. Be patient with yourself and with the people around you.

Taking Care of Yourself

In the weeks after a loss, small things matter.

  • Eat something, drink water, and rest when you can
  • Accept help, and say yes when a friend offers a meal or a ride
  • Talk about the person you lost, and let yourself cry
  • Put off big decisions, if you can, until you feel steadier
  • Go to a place that gives you comfort, and take a walk outside

Helping Children Through Loss

Children grieve too, in their own way. Use simple, honest words, and avoid phrases such as “went to sleep.” Let them ask questions, and answer as truthfully as you can.

Children are welcome at a viewing or service when the experience is explained to them beforehand and the choice is theirs. Familiar routines help them feel safe.
