Obituary For Ruth M. Wise

On June 20, 2026 our beloved mother, Ruth Margaret Wise, 98, went home to Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ruth was a long-time Steubenville resident, recently residing in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ruth was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a friend to all.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Ruth Myers, and her siblings, Leota Myers, Lloyd Myers and Helen Myers. Her husband of 50 years, the love of her life, John C. Wise, also preceded her passing.

Ruth Margaret is survived by daughter Nancy L. Clendenen (Dan) and son John C. Wise Jr. (Linda), four grandchildren Moira Losch, Breanna Zack, John R. Wise and Kelly Janisch, as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth Margaret grew up on a dairy farm in Unity, Ohio. She attended Kent State University to become an educator like her mother and older sister. There she met her future husband, John, who had recently returned from WW II service. Ruth was a retired teacher who worked primarily as a 5th-grade teacher in the Steubenville City Schools. She loved her students and spent hours planning fun lessons and activities for them. Ruth was also a proud 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

A daughter of the Great Depression, the simple pleasures in life brought the greatest joy to Ruth Margaret. Bird watching, family vacations, picnics, wildflowers, sunny days, searching for four-leaf clovers, a Sunday drive in the country, or an ice cream cone with her family made her day! She will be remembered as always affectionately reminding her children to “keep your mind on business” and “get your act together!”

A private graveside ceremony will be held at Union Cemetery.

I want to express my condolences to the Wise family. Mrs. Wise was my 5th grade teacher at Harding when it held grades kindergarten through 8th grade, a fine building and citadel of learning. She was a stern teacher with a strong sense of proprietary who told me that a gentleman should always open a door for a lady and remove his hat in her presence. We need more teachers today of character like Mrs. Wise instilling proper values in our young students. Paul Zelich
