Robert Wayne Saltsman, 87, of Steubenville, Ohio, died Monday, June 06, 2011 at his home peacefully in his sleep after a long but energetic struggle with a number of illnesses. He was born April 20, 1924 in Steubenville, Ohio. Robert was a pillar of the Steubenville construction industry for most of his life. He and his brother, Joseph Saltsman, operated L.G. Saltsman & Sons for over 50 years building and repairing many parts of Steubenville, Ohio. In his later years he was a mentor and a guiding force for his brother’s son, Jim Saltsman who owns Fort Steuben Maintenance. Robert was a master plumber and a Mason for over 60 years. He founded the local 490 in the 1960’s (now 495) Plumbers Union for the welfare and benefit of all plumbers in Jefferson County. He also served as Chairman of the Steubenville Board of Health for 42 years. Robert loved Steubenville High School and Big Red Football holding season tickets for more than 60 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Saltsman who died in 1957 and Jean Saltsman who died in 2010. He is survived by his son, Robert P. Saltsman, grandchildren Logan and Montanna Saltsman as well as his son in spirit, Jim Saltsman. The family would like to especially thank his caretakers of the last few years, Dolores and Trish, whose constant care and companionship made his final years more joyful and comfortable. Friends may call at Shorac Funeral Home (formerly McClave Funeral Home), 611 N. Fourth St, Steubenville on Tuesday 6 – 9 p.m. where a service will be held Wednesday 1p.m. with Rev. Jeff Proya officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the scholarship fund for the benefit of a Steubenville City Schools Student each year which will be established in his name.

I offer the Saltsman family my deepest sympathy for Bob's illnesses and death. Indeed he endured an "energetic" struggle and received a well deserved peaceful repose. So many good memories come to mind as I read Bob's obituary. I still can see him the first day I met him at my Aunt Jean's house - before he was "Uncle" Bob: young, happy, and enjoying life and work. As a teenager, I was able to join Job's Daughter because of his legacy of Masonry. When my dad died, Bob arrived immediately to offer support and help. In the weeks that followed, he was there when we needed him. After I married, he always asked about the work I was doing, or about my involvement in politics, or what was happening at the pipe mill where my husband worked. He was keenly interested in others and was delighted to see people succeed. Bob was a good listener, a good advisor, and a hard worker. I'm glad that we had a chance to have him in our lives, and can only hope to carry on with the fervor and values that he possessed.
