Social Security & Survivor Benefits

After a death, families often wonder what Social Security can do for them. Here is a plain-language summary of the main benefits, and where to get exact answers.

The basics

Two Kinds of Help

  • One-time $255 payment

Social Security pays a one-time $255 lump-sum death payment, usually to a surviving spouse, or to certain children if there is no eligible spouse.

  • Monthly survivor benefits

Surviving spouses, children and sometimes other family members may qualify for monthly benefits based on the worker’s record.

The $255 Lump-Sum Payment

The payment generally goes to a surviving spouse who was living in the same household as the worker, or to children who were receiving or became eligible for benefits on the worker’s record in the month of death. If you are not already receiving benefits, you generally have two years from the date of death to apply. See the Social Security lump-sum death payment page.

The deceased worker generally must have worked long enough to qualify.
