Zelma Ruth (Huffman) Barnhouse, 90, of Puyallup, WA, a previous long-time resident of Ohio, passed way peacefully Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Born January, 17, 1919, in Zanesville, OH, she moved with her family to Steubenville, OH, where she attended school. While working as a legal secretary in Steubenville, she met and married Russell S. Barnhouse and became the mother of two girls. As a member of the Pleasant Hill United Presbyterian Church near Steubenville, she taught children’s Sunday School for many years and held various offices in the church women’s organization. In 1974 she moved to Puyallup, WA as a widow of one year to live near her two daughters who had previously relocated in that State. Again, she was active in church service and also became a long-time volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Katie (Dixon) Huffman; her sister, Verla (Huffman) Moore; her brother, Warren Huffman; stepfather, Chauncey Hellyer; and by one of her daughters, Donna Lynn (Barnhouse) Rockhill.Zelma is survived by her other daughter, Diane Kay (Thomas) Whitehouse of Puyallup, WA; three grandchildren, Susan (Whitehouse) (Russell) Snyder of Tacoma, WA; David (Lora) Whitehouse of Minn., MN; and Daniel Whitehouse of Puyallup, WA; and four great-grandsons.Friends and family may call at Shorac Funeral Home (the former McClave Funeral Home), 611 North 4th Street, Steubenville, Tuesday, March 24 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. with Rev. William Brown officiating. Burial at Ft. Steuben. Your preference of memorial to Zelma is acceptable and appreciated.
