Obituary For Yvonne I. Pugh

Yvonne I. Pugh, age 90, lifelong resident of Chester, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 of natural causes at her residence where she made her home for over 60 years, surrounded by her loving family.   She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on February 4, 1924, the daughter of the late William Raymond and Irma Perrin Kerr, and in addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dr. David S. Pugh, in 2001, by a brother, Raymond Kerr, and by her in-laws, Rev. George Stanley Pugh and Eva Lorena Stewart Pugh.  She was the last living granddaughter of William Thomas Kerr, founder of Flag Day on June 14.  She graduated from Beaver Falls High School and went on to continue her education, studying at Geneva College and receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse from Sewickley Hospital School of Nursing in 1945, where she was an honors student and elected class president all three years.   Her high school and college classmates fondly called her “Frenchie”, referring to her visits to her mother’s family in Paris, France. While working at Sewickley Hospital, she met the love of her life, Dr. David S. Pugh, and they were married on January 24, 1945, by the Rev. Roy Allison at her family’s residence in Beaver Falls, PA, before her husband was deployed to Japan during World War II.  Together, they worked side by side in a private medical practice in Chester, for over 43 years, giving compassionate, quality care to the residents of the tri-state area.   In her earlier years, she was an active and devoted member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of Presbyterian Women, held numerous offices and was given an accolade by the Upper Ohio Valley Presbytery.   One honor she held dear to her heart was being named the Grand Marshal of the annual Chester Parade.  A devoted wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, lovingly called “Nana”, she is survived by her children, David, Richard “Dick”, Denise (Ted) McKenna, Suzanne (Bill) Sarkine, and George R. (Peggy) Pugh; grandchildren Scott (Michelle), David S. II (Jennifer), Jeffrey, Jonathan, Nicole (Mike) McKenzie, Natalie (Shawn) Hall, Teddy (Liz) McKenna II, Jason, Jillian (fiancé Dan Ford) and Jocelyn Pugh; great-grandchildren Britney and David S. III, Ashley and Steven, Caleb and Lindsey, Sara, Aidan and Avery Hall, Michael and Nicolas McKenzie, Teddy McKenna III; brother Jack (Sue) Kerr, sisters-in-law Elna Kerr, Eva Lyn (Winston) Smith, her lifelong friend and neighbor Gert Ludovici, and many loving nephews and nieces.   Per Yvonne’s request, her services will be private on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Arner Funeral Chapel, Chester with Rev. Jason Elliott officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 508 Indiana Avenue, Chester, WV  26034 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Interment will be at Locust Hill Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.  The family wishes to send special thanks to Dr. Kubicki for the exceptional care she received.

I did not have the honor of knowing Yvonne personally. But judging from the way her Grandson Jason has spoken of her, I have no doubt she was an exceptional lady whose absence will be widely felt. Please know my heart and sympathies go out to the entire Pugh Family. And also my envy, that you had the great good fortune of such an amazing lady to grace your family and your lives.
