Obituary For William A. Becker

William A. Becker, Jr. 72 of Bloomingdale, Ohio died Thursday evening at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born in Steubenville, Ohio on August 28, 1930 a son of the late William A. and Bessie Pipkin Becker, Sr. Bill was the owner of Becker Construction from 1955 to the present. He also operated Becker Realty and was licensed in the states of Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He was a commercial and residential developer. He built and developed Williamstown Apartments, Stanton Woods, Highland Acres, Highland Park and Oakcrest subdivisions. As owner and operator of Meridian Development Company he purchased and was responsible for the restoration of the Fort Steuben Hotel. He coordinated the restoration of the Unionport Community Center and was named citizen of the year by the Unionport Ohio Lions Club. Bill graduated from Wintersville High School and attended the University of Cincinnati and Steubenville Business College. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Becker’s professional memberships include board of directors of the Union Bank; Steubenville Board of Realtors of which he served as president in 1973; past president of the Upper Ohio Valley Homebuilders; American Association of Certified Appraisers; National Association of Realtors; Ohio Association of Realtors; past director of Wintersville Chamber of Commerce and a member of Jefferson County School Board. In 1978, he was named Realtor of the Year by the Real Estate Board of Steubenville. Bill was preceded in death by one son William Douglas Becker and one grandson Joey Vecchione. Surviving are his wife Helen Peveich Becker; five daughters Terri Becker Friend and her husband Steve, Cynthia Becker Miller and her husband Richard, Carol Becker, Gail Becker Vecchione and her husband Mike, and Karen Becker; five grandchildren Steven Friend, Michael Bethel, Christina Sensabaugh and Sarah and Matthew Vecchione; one brother Robert J. Becker, Sr. of Bloomingdale, Ohio and one sister Shirley Moro and her husband Ed of Loveland, Ohio. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral liturgy with mass 9:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church with Monsignor Gerald E. Calovini officiating. Burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Vigil services 8:45 p.m. Sunday Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad will conduct military services at the cemetery chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NORD, National Organization for Rare Disorders, 55 Kenosia Avenue, P.O. Box 1968, Danbury CT 06813-1968
