Obituary For Walter G. Birrell

Walter G. Birrell, 82, of Steubenville, Ohio died on Monday December 8, 2014 at Lifeline Hospital in Wintersville, OH after a short battle with renal cavity cancer. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was born August 28, 1932 in Steubenville, OH, and is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Alice V. Birrell. He was preceded in death by his son Stephen W. Birrell; his parents Henry “Harry” Walker Birrell and Alice G. Caven; brother Harry W. Birrell; sister Harriet C. McElroy and nephew James D. McElroy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Daniel (Susan) Birrell of West Lafayette, OH; two daughters Susan (Scott) Post of Noblesville IN and Dina Birrell (Jon Sabol) of Santa Clara, CA; daughter-in-law Tamara Birrell of Columbus, OH and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a 1952 graduate of Steubenville High School, and then spent two years in the Navy as an aircraft engine mechanic. He worked for 40 years at Weirton Steel in the Tin Mill, retiring in 1992. Walter was a gentle man who treated everyone with courtesy and respect. He was known for his sense of humor, good manners, and distinctive white beard. He was interested in aviation, and loved to camp, travel in the motorhome, and spend the winter months in Florida with his wife. Friends may call at Dunlope – Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Rd., Wintersville on Thursday 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. and on Friday at Bell Chapel United Methodist Church, 3419 State Route 213, Steubenville, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Proya officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Four Seasons Ministries at Bell Chapel UMC, 3419 State Rte 213, Steubenville, OH 43952. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Trinity West and Lifeline Hospitals for their care and compassion. .
