Verna Buchanan Hutton, 96, of Sebring, Ohio, formerly of Wintersville, Ohio, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at Crandall Medical Center. She was born in Continental, Ohio on July 6, 1908, a daughter of the late Ira William and Iva Mae Spitsnaugle Gillespie. Verna was a graduate of Conneaut, Ohio High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing, Cleveland. She had done graduate work at the University of Michigan. Verna was a very active member of Wintersville U.M. Church; U.M. Women; Hope Circle; chair of the Missions Commission and Conference delegate; former worthy matron of O.E.S. Corona Chapter of Paulding, Ohio. She had been a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital, Paulding County Hospital, County Health Nurse of Paulding County, Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville and Forester Nursing Home in Wintersville. Verna was a Jefferson County Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. Verna was a member of the Wintersville Women’s Club. Preceding Verna in death were her first husband O.W. Buchanan in 1970; second husband G. Donald Hutton in 1995; three grandchildren Cynthia Jean Buchanan, Jeffrey William Buchanan and David Neil Buchanan; two brothers Forest and Ivan Gillespie; and two sisters Faye Holmes and Louise Preston. In 1950 Verna was named “Good Neighbor” of Paulding County and in 1981 Wintersville U.M. Woman of the Year. Verna is survived by one daughter Nancy E. (Rev. Lawrence) Thomas of Findlay, Ohio; two sons Rev. John I.E. (Kathryn) Buchanan of North Canton and David W. (Nancy Jean) Buchanan of Bloomingdale; stepson David B. (Elaine) Hutton of Bloomingdale; stepdaughter Rebecca D. (John) Hawkins of Louisiana; 8 grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 11 step great grandchildren and one sister Lois Shumake of Conneaut, Ohio. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home onThursday 7-9 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Clint Quillen officiating. Burial at Fort Steuben Burial Estates. Memorial contributions may be made to O.W. Buchanan Junior High School Library or Wintersville U.M. Church Memorial Fund.
