Obituary For Thomas J. Arim

Thomas J. Arim, 79, of Steubenville, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Trinity West, Steubenville. He was born March 31, 1923, in Steubenville, the son of the late Thomas J. and Sarah (Fogg) Arim. He graduated in 1942 from Steubenville High School and immediately began fulfilling his dream of a career in radio when he became an announcer and news reporter for WSTV radio that same year. When WSTV branched out into television in 1953, Tom was the first voice to be heard on WSTV-TV when he did the official sign on. He remained with WSTV and held positions such as production supervisor, production coordinator, switcher and director, even as the station changed its identity to WTOV-9. Tom did narration for hundreds of commercials through the years and was known to many as the “Voice of Channel 9.” He retired from WTOV-9 in 1989 after a career of 47 years. He attended the College of Steubenville from 1946-48 and was active in the Steubenville Little Theatre and the Steubenville Playhouse. Tom was a member of Holy Family Parish in Steubenville. Tom was a loyal and caring friend who loved flowers, photography, music and traveling. He traveled to many places, but he loved Steubenville best. He received the most joy from his days at Channel 9 and the many friends he made through his career at the station. Tom was preceded in death by Dr. Paul W. Ruksha, a close friend, and is survived by friends Rick and Tina Smith of New Cumberland, West Virginia. Friends will be received at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9; where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Richard Tuttle officiating. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio.
