Thelma Long (Schoppe) Bronson, 91, of Wintersville and Steubenville, Ohio passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Trinity West Hospital. She was born January 20, 1923 to parents, William David Long and Goldie Burchfield Long. She was raised through her youth in Bloomingdale, Ohio. Preceding her in death were her siblings, brother Kenneth Long and sister Frances Long Alexander. Thelma was married first to Robert William Schoppe for 35 years, who passed in 1976. Her second husband was Irwin P. Bronson. They were married for 14 years, until his death in 1994. Two dear sisters-in-law, Mildred Sullivan and Virginia Calabrese. Also her grandson, Gregory Alan Schoppe whom died at age 15 in 1985. Thelma and Bob Schoppe were blessed with three sons, Robert "Bob" (Vicky) of Houston, TX, Darrell Lee (Tess) of Toronto, OH and Richard "Gus" (Katie) of Steubenville, OH. Her granddaughters are Dina Strickland of Clendenin, WV and Ericka Belcher of Elkview, WV, Paige Gallegos of Pearland, TX and Rachael Schoppe of Toronto, OH. She also has six great grandchildren. Thelma was fiercely independent in her life, even though she was married for nearly 50 years, maybe because she raised her first son "Bobby" for 2 years while dad was in the war zone of Africa and Europe. Her first job in the workforce was as an "Avon lady" in the late 1950's. She took pride in her educational achievements, which spurred her to support the school system as an official for the PTA's of Lincoln, Grant and "Big Red". She was on the Council of Steubenville Schools and later in life became a volunteer H.O.S.T. mentor at Indian Creek Elementary. Working much of her life, her jobs included office secretary and bookkeeper for John Criss Realty for 6 plus years, the Ohio Commission of Aging, and in Houston as a resident manager of Broadway Square Apartments and St. Paul Insurance. Thelma loved people and she felt it was reciprocated often. She was a staunch democrat and a constant advocate for veterans. Her commitment to organizations showed because she held various official positions in the American Legion Auxiliary Post 33 and attended many conferences to stay abreast with the Legion's agenda and the issues concerning the Democratic Women of Ohio. Always eager to join in activities that were a large part of her club's functions, she enjoyed Toronto's VFW, Eagles, Wintersville, Legion 8 et 40, Gadabouts and Weirton Four Seasons. Thelma sang with Sweet Adeline's of Toronto, as well as the Houston chapter. She was proud of her protestant faith, as a member of First Presbyterian Church and later First Westminster, and the bonds that she made early on with her "south end" neighbors while the family was being raised. All of these things contributed to her loving ways and joyful personality. Friends may call at Shorac Funeral Home, 611 N. Fourth Street, Steubenville on Tuesday 4 – 7 p.m. where a service will be held Wednesday 10 a.m. with Chaplain Dana Campbell officiating. Burial at Bloomingdale Cemetery.
