Stanley Allen Gaston, 85, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away on Sunday, July 17 at Wyngate Senior Living Center in Weirton, West Virginia due to complications from Alzheimer’s/long COVID. Stanley was born in Steubenville, Ohio on July 29, 1936, the son of the late Stanley and Edna Mae Gaston.
Stanley attended Steubenville High School and West Liberty University. He worked at National/Weirton Steel for 43 years as an industrial engineer and a labor relations negotiator, retiring in 1999. Early in life, he sold suits at Myer & Stone in downtown Steubenville. Stanley served on the Board of Trustees for the Steubenville and Jefferson County Library system for eight years; was a member of the Academy of Lifelong Learning, the Elks Club, and First Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was also active with the Jefferson County Historical Association and served on the committee for retired salaried employees of National/Weirton Steel.
Stanley enjoyed attending Steubenville Big Red football games for more than 40 years and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. After the passing of his wife Carole in 2014, Stanley attended Big Red games regularly with his good friend Donna Lucas. In his younger days, Stanley was a high school basketball referee.
Stanley was preceded in death by his wife Carole. Surviving are four sons, Mark Gaston of Wadsworth, OH, Gregg Gaston of Fountain Valley, CA, Brian Gaston of Alexandria, VA, and Bruce Gaston of Arlington, VA. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Courtney Halverson (Ryan), Craig Gaston, Caylee Gaston, and Jake Gaston; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Miles, and Ellie Halverson; and one brother, Ron Gaston of St. Clairsville, OH.
Friends may call at the Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Monday, July 25 from 4 – 7pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 N. Fourth St. in Steubenville, where friends will be received from 10 am until the time of service at 11 am with Rev. Jason Elliott officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
