Sarah G. Woodard died in Canton, Ohio on Thursday, August 11, 2016 after recently celebrating her 94th birthday. She was born in Steubenville, Ohio to Otto J. and Sarah E. (Thompson) Gescheider and spent almost all of her life there. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her beloved husband of 62 years, Austin R. Woodard. She is survived by three sons: Austin R. Woodard III (Carol) and J. Thomas Woodard, both of Madison, WI, and William L. Woodard of Canton, OH along with four grandchildren: Jason Martin of Madison, WI, Heather Woodard of Dover, New Hampshire and Elizabeth and Kristin Woodard of Canton, OH. Mrs. Woodard graduated from Steubenville High School and Mount Holyoke College with a degree in English and a primary school teaching certificate. She taught kindergarten in Springfield, MA and Steubenville before becoming a homemaker for the balance of her life. She was a member of First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville and volunteered for numerous activities there including the Board of Deacons. She was also devoted to the Jeffco Workshop and School of Bright Promise and enjoyed membership with numerous civic organizations such as Questers, Query Club, Twig, Meals on Wheels and many others. Other interests included gardening, travel, antique collection and cooking. A brief committal service will be conducted by Rev. Jason Elliot at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 19 at the chapel of Union cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Jeffco Workshop, both of Steubenville.
