Obituary For Ruth G. Gump

Ruth G. Gump, 86, of Wintersville, Ohio died Monday, December 23, 2013 at Sienna Woods.  She was born April 14, 1927 in Adrian, WV a daughter of the late Hugh and Thelma A. Waugh Claypole.  Ruth attended Wintersville Church of Christ.  She was also a life member of Women’s Missionary Association of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.  Ruth was a buyer for the Hub Department Store.  She was a member of the Wintersville American Legion Post #557 Auxiliary, Friendship Club and for 45 years the American Red Cross.  Ruth was a Girl Scouts leader for over 53 years.  She attended five national Girl Scouts conventions.  With the Girl Scouts on the national level, she was awarded the Thanks Badge which is the highest honor nationally and was awarded the Black Diamond Award which is the highest regionally.   She was a volunteer for the Ray Laman Christmas Party.  She was preceded in death by her husband John D. Gump whom she married on May 7, 1946 and brother Robert Claypole.  Surviving are her daughter Sheila Riffle of Wintersville, OH; son-in-law Allan Riffle of Wintersville, OH; grandson John Allan Riffle of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.  Friends may call at Dunlope – Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Rd., Wintersville, OH on Thursday 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. where a service will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday with Pastor Imre Gulyas officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be directed to Girl Scouts Troop 4692, c/o Love Wood, 301 Alfred Drive, Wintersville, OH 43953.

From those earliest days when our familes knew each other in Adrian up through the present when I would visit Ruth we have always had a great relationship.     My sincerest sympathy on the loss of your family member. Ruth was one of our women's fellowship members and loved dearly.What an amazing and giving women she was!She always put others first.And when she tol me she would drive to Pittsburgh by herself I really knew she was amazing!! Takes courage to drive on those roads.Truly loved her and she will be missed.

    Sheila and family, Words cannot express how sorry we are for your loss. Ruth was such an inspiration to all of us in the troop. The lessons we learned by her example will stay with us all for the rest of our lives and carry on for years to come. That is the legacy she leaves.
