Ruth Edna Thomas Hickle, 97, died March 9, 2024 at Oakmont Manor in Flatwood, KY. She was born March 14, 1926 in Mingo Jct., Ohio the ninth child of Frederick Alvin & Mary Lavinia Monigold Thomas. Ruth was the ninth of twelve children with only Helen left. Helen is number twelve of twelve. Ruth was ‘The great family pie maker’. She was a great daughter, sister, mom and grandma and a Silver Star Mother to Tom, wounded twice during Vietnam, David and Fred. Grandson DJ also served in Iraq.
Ruth was a former crane operator at Wheeling Steel in Steubenville and during WWII she worked in Washington D.C. sending out Social Security checks. She retired as a nurse’s aide.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Charles Thomas Hickle, Sr.; 3 sons David (Debbie) Hickle, Wayne, PA, Tom “Chuck” Hickle and Fred Hickle from Steubenville area.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Mary Hickle of Close To Home (assisted living), 617 Center Street, Ironton, Ohio, 11 grandchildren Neal, Marcy, Sarah, Charlie, Jason, Joshua, Melissa, DJ (Kate), Jeremy (Patti), Matthew (Sarah) and Corinna (Bill) and many great grandchildren. Her care takers were her sister Helen Adkins, Flatwoods, KY, and nephew Martin Keith Adkins (Sheila) of Franklin Furnace, Ohio. A special niece Darlene Cordle, Ashland, KY and nursing home roommate Barbara Caniff.

Burial will be on Wednesday March 13th at Fort Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville, Ohio with visitation starting at 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00.
