Obituary For Rinaldo Saccoccia

Rinaldo Saccoccia (91)

" I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."

Timothy 4:7

Our father and grandfather took his place in the army of our Lord and Savior

and joined his loving wife Helen in heaven on July 7, 2016. He left a lifetime of memories filled with love, laughter, and support for his family to cherish.

Rinaldo was born in Pratola Peligna, Italy on November 5, 1924 the son of the late Pelino and Agatha Antonucci Saccoccia. He landed on Ellis Island at the age of thirteen and unable to speak the English language. He received very little formal education briefly attending school at St. Anthony and Grant Jr. High before entering into the government work camps to help provide for his brother and parents. He served his country proudly and was honorably discharged from the US Army and fought in World War II as a "gunner" in the 787th Anti Aircraft Artillary Division attached to the 3rd Army under General George Patton. Through the grace of God he not only survived the war but also Hitler's last offensive in the infamous Battle of the Bulge.

Rinaldo married his lovely wife Helen on September 22, 1948 at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Steubenville. Dad was a selfless man and set the tone of the household to be God and family. He practiced tough love with his children and led by example with his relentless work ethic.

Dad lived a full life and stayed involved with his families lives until the very end.

While practicing his faith at St. Anthony he coached football for 10 years and touched the lives of an entire generation of "Hawks". His pride in St. Anthony

School infused him to be the first in line to volunteer when work needed to be done at the school or church. He was also a member of the Knights of St. Anthony, St. Anthony Men's Club, Columbus Club, American Legion Post 33, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel 40 year Club, Honor Flight America-Cleveland Branch,

Catholic Central Booster Club, Steubenville Little League, and the Big Red Booster Club. He joined Holy Family Parish after St. Anthony closed.

Dad happiness centered around watching his children , grandchildren, and great grandchildren live and grow. He loved the holidays with family and friends, as well as playing cards and bowling. He was also preceded in death by a brother , Juistine "Joe". He is survived by four children who will always honor his memory. Reno (Patty) and Raymond of Steubenville, Marianne (Ken) Mannie of Okemos, Michigan and Richard (Barb) of Brigantine, NJ. Two sisters, Nancy (Auggie) Lellie of Weirton and Dora (Anthony) DiMarzio of Follansbee and a brother Rich (Pat) of Canton.

Nine grandchildren and nine great grand children will remember his love.

Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Sunday 5-8 p.m. Vigil service 7:45 p.m. Sunday

Celebration of Rinaldo's life will be a funeral mass on Monday at 10am at Holy Family Church with Monsignor Gerald Calovini VF celebrant. (Visitation on Monday 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at church). Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad will conduct services at cemetery chapel.

Donations can be made in Rinaldo's name to Prime Time Center on Lovers Lane.

Reno, Patty and all the Saccoccia Family,I didn't know your Dad except to see him at The Laurels but I know he had to be a special person by the children he raised. This is way overdue and for that I apologize but I want to offer my condolences along with prayers for strength during this time of great loss. Take comfort in knowing that he is no longer bound by a body limited by old age and illness but he is walking on streets of gold with his beloved wife and most of all his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and one day you will all be reunited!Sincerely,Margaret Tassey Metz: CCHS Class of 1967 (Dan & Margie Metz)

Raymond, Reno & Family, I am truly sorry about the loss of your dad but we all know he's in Heaven with the Lord, your mom and everyone he loves that has passed on. He was a very nice man and me and my Uncle Elio loved him very much. We would see you dad at activities held at the Spot Bar and when your dad and my uncle saw each other they would talk up a storm about when they were younger and in the war together. I pray that all of you find Peace knowing that he is not suffering anymore and he is all well now. He's another one that God threw away the mold after he was made. There is not many fellows like him left on this earth anymore. May God Bless all of You. Love Lala Leone

Mr. Saccoccia's obituary touched me because I knew of his love for his family and for St. Anthony's Parish. He and all of our fathers were great role models. Day in and day out, they demonstrated their love of family, country, Steubenville, and their Catholic faith. Their legacy will never die.
