Obituary For Richard Q. King

Richard Q. King, 82, of Steubenville, Ohio died Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at Trinity Medical Center West while recovering from surgery. Richard was born March 6, 1924 in Scottdale, PA a son of the late S. Quay and Georgia Palmer King. He was also preceded in death by his brother Attorney Robert P. King; sister-in-law Margaret B. King. Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances Elizabeth Wilson King; son Richard Q. King, Jr., his wife Gail Lane King, and their two children Elizabeth and Katherine King all of Kent, Ohio; son Attorney Robert W. King, his wife Renee Rosenblum King, and their three children Andrew, Allison and Bradley King all of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; and niece Kathryn King Szczerbicki of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Mr. King devoted his life to the nurturing, building, and education of his family and community through his teaching, coaching and many years of service in Steubenville, OH, Massillon, OH, and Mansfield, OH. He taught high school and coached football and other sports in all three school systems, coaching on state football championship teams at Massillon. Richard graduated from Steubenville High School, Muskingum College, and received his post graduate degree from Kent State University. He was a Navy veteran serving in the South Pacific during WWII. Mr. King followed his coaching years with ten years of service as Director of the Ohio State University Mansfield Campus where he brought to fruition the building of the campus. He subsequently served as Dean of Kent State University, East Liverpool Campus, from 1968 until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement Mr. King served on the Jefferson Community College Financial Board and Steubenville Rotary Club, which honored him as a Paul Harris Fellow. With the help of his wife and others he organized the Old Fort Steuben Project, Inc. to reconstruct and establish Fort Steuben, which was successfully completed months before his death. Mr. King was an elder at the Covenant Presbyterian Church and a devoted proponent of his Lord’s work at the church for almost 40 years. Friends may call at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville on Saturday 2-4 p.m. (ONLY) and Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday 11-11:30 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. David Massimi officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery.
