Obituary For Ralph J. Straker

His firm handshake, mischievous smile, wry sense of humor and baby-blue eyes were traits obvious to anyone who crossed paths with Ralph “Strake” Straker, who was born in Steubenville on January 7, 1934 to the late William R. and Mary Kensicki Straker.

Ralph graduated from Catholic Central High School and entered the U.S. Air Force, where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was employed at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel for more than 45 years and retired in 1997 as a Heater in the 80” Hot Strip Mill.

Although favoring fishing and bowling in his earlier days, his passion turned to golf, where he achieved five holes-in-one. While living in Ohio, Ralph enjoyed boating and water skiing at Tappan Lake with family and friends. He also loved to dance and was quite the photographer. His uncanny ability to devise a solution to any problem, whether at work or at home, is fondly remembered by his co-workers and family. He also was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and watched them, no matter where he lived.

Ralph was preceded in death by his brothers Bill and Frank, and sister, Catherine Flinn.

Survivors include his wife of almost 53 years, the former Martha Barkett, and their four children—Kevin (Cheryl); Barb; Shari (Dave) Hamlin and Amy (Brian) Bartemes. Ralph also was the proud grandfather of eleven grandsons and three granddaughters. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Margaret Straker Schubring of Cleveland.

He passed away peacefully on July 18 in Venice, FL, where he had lived for many years. There will be visitation at Holy Family Church on Saturday, August 22, at 10:30am, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life mass at 11:00. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Central High School or Holy Family Church.

Ralph leaves us with beautiful memories of his deep love of family, his wit, wisdom, smile, kindness and never-ending jokes.

Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
