Dear Babe and family, I want to express my deepest condolences for you today. I am so sorry I cant get to Jacks funeral. Im just too sick to make the trip. I promised Jack I would be one of his pallbearers, but under the circumstances I think he would understand. I wanted to give a eulogy too. Since I cant be there let me write what I would have said. A Eulogy for Jack My name is Paul Valles. I was born over at the old Gill Memorial Hospital in 1949. Ive known Jack all my life. He and my dad, Oscar Valles, were best friends over a lifetime. Jack almost didnt make it. He was a stillborn and the doctor set his little body aside to work to save his mother. Luckily for Jack and all of us, his aunt cleaned out his mouth, and breathed life into his lungs. My father and Jack were in the same confirmation class. Both their fathers were mechanics. John Savage worked for the Hudson dealership. Jack grew up in Mingo. He spent time living in Wheeling after the 1937 flood destroyed his familys home. In high school Jack was working as an usher in a movie theater in Steubenville. My dad worked in a bowling alley as a pinsetter. Jack had been over to my dads house during high school and had met my grandfather. Jack and Dad both enlisted in the Ohio National Guard before the war. Jack was home on Christmas leave when the police stopped by the house on the evening of December 8th 1941 and told him he would have to leave immediately to rejoin his outfit out in California. The Steubenville National Guard, Company C, made up the 151 Medical Battalion with two other companies one from Akron and the other from Chagrin Falls. They were put in General Pattons field exercise in the Mohave Desert. One evening as the maneuvers were ending Jack sat on a hill and looked down on the long snake of red taillights of the trucks and tanks of Pattons army as it started on its long journey to North Africa.
