Nina Goehring McGowan 77 of Steubenville, Ohio died Monday, May 19, 2003 at Carriage Inn of Steubenville. She was born in Steubenville on May 24, 1925, the only daughter of the late Dr. Carl and Eliza Cranmer Goehring. Nina is survived by her husband of more than forty-five years, Richard T. McGowan; daughter Eliza M. McGowan of Steubenville; son Richard M. McGowan and his wife Wendy and two grandchildren Shelby A. and Travis R. McGowan all of Morristown, Tennessee. Nina graduated from Steubenville High School. She matriculated at the University of Michigan School of Music obtaining a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degree in 1946 and 1947 respectively, majoring in violin performance with a minor in composition and harp performance. Upon graduation she spent one season with the Columbus Philharmonic conducted by Izler Solomon and two seasons with the Kansas City Philharmonic under the direction of Hans Schweiger. Nina then resided in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for four years during which time she had her own weekly radio broadcast for the Ministry of Education, and was soloist with both the Rio Symphony and the Orchestra de Camera and the General Electric Hour broadcasts. In February 1954 she won first place award in the Young Artists of South America Competition resulting in a solo concert tour of all South American capital cities. Since returning to Steubenville, Nina appeared with the Wheeling Symphony as Principal Harpist lead by Henry Mazer, and was Concertmaster for fifteen seasons of the Tuscarawas Philharmonic directed by Marjorie Henke, later succeeded by Eric Benjamin. She was founder of the Von Steuben Ensemble and performed many solo and ensemble recitals in this and other areas. As a teacher she served on the faculties of Bethany College and West Liberty State College as Lecturer in Strings and Chamber Music, and taught privately in her home for more than thirty-five years. Nina studied violin with Roy Shoemaker, head of violin at the Pittsburgh Musical Institute. Other violin teachers included Wassily Besekirsky, Joseph Knitzer, Gilbert Ross, Henri Nosco and Oliver Edel; and she studied harp with Lynn Wainwright Palmer. A Memorial Service will be held at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 North Fourth Street, Steubenville on Friday, May 30, 2003 at three o’clock. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, in care of Robert Henke, Financial Manager, 180 Grandview Avenue N.W., Canton, Ohio 44708 and to Jefferson County Animal Welfare League, 129 Meadow Road, Wintersville, Ohio 43953.
