Nancy K. Courtney of Steubenville, OH, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, November 29, 2021, at the age of 69.
Daughter of the late Donald L. Hobson and Laura M. (Brown) Hobson, Nancy was born on July 16, 1952, and raised on a farm near New Alexandria, OH. After graduating from Brilliant High School in 1970, she earned a BA in art education from Asbury College in 1974 and taught for over 40 years. She married Thomas R. Courtney on August 4, 1978, and they shared 37 years of wedded bliss as well as three children: Charles, Laura, and David. In recent years, she found a special joy as the cherished grandmother of Graham, Louis, Elliott, and Jamie. She was a faithful member of Restoration Church (formerly Ohio Valley Christian Center) for almost 50 years. Mrs. Courtney was a dedicated teacher at Jefferson County Christian School where she served for 34 years and impacted the lives of generations of students; she also played a vital role in the growth of the school during her tenure as administrator. Nancy was an avid quilter and painter and also served as the chaplain of the Fort Steuben Chapter of the DAR.
In addition to her parents, her husband preceded her in death. Nancy is survived by her three children: Charles E. (Erin) Courtney of Indianapolis, IN; Laura E. Courtney of Johnstown, PA; and David T. (Crystal) Courtney of Geneva, IL, as well as her four grandsons. She also leaves one sister, Donna (Larry) Dennis, and one brother, James Hobson, in addition to many other extended family members.
Visiting hours will be at Shorac Funeral Home in Wintersville on Saturday from 3pm-7pm. Services, conducted by Pastor Randy Sells, will be there on Sunday at 1pm. Following the service she will be laid to rest at Fort Steuben Burial Estates in Wintersville next to the love of her life. Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Jefferson County Christian School.
If you had the privilege of knowing Nancy Courtney, you would not forget her laugh, her commitment to Christian education, her creativity, and her devotion to her family. You also likely felt the love she generously lavished on all those she encountered. Most importantly you would have known someone who embodied Matthew 5:16. She was a prayer warrior whose love and faithfulness pointed others to our Savior.

Our world will be different without Nancy. I've known her all of my life-we were as close as cousins can be, and she welcomed my wife as a member of the family and introduced her to quilting. I have too many wonderful memories to share them all. Nancy noted that her family was not very demonstrative, so she always made a point to tell people she loved them and to say positive things about those she loved. Her life ended with a no-lose situation just as Paul said in Philippians 1:21: For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Mrs. Courtney (Miss Hobson) was my art teacher when I was in jr. high at Buckeye Central in Dillonvale. We reconnected when we enrolled our daughter, Sofia at JCCS in 2011. I had the great pleasure of going on several fieldtrips to the Stifel Art Center in Wheeling with Mrs. Courtney as well as spending time with her at the school. I enjoyed looking at her family pictures and hearing the wonderful stories about her grandkids. It's hard to imagine JCCS without her but I am so thankful that Sofia had her influence for so many years. To the family, my heart breaks for each and every one of you. Deepest, heartfelt sympathy to all who loved her. May she rest in peace.

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Courtney. She was my art teacher, English and Literature teacher, and History teacher while I attended JCCS. She was truly a wonderful person, and I'm blessed to have known such a strong Christian role model. She never failed to mention God's blessings in her life, and she was one of the greatest prayer warriors I've ever known. She taught me so much, not only about school subjects, but also about life! She always spoke about how she couldn't wait to be back with her husband someday. Now she's finally back together with him. I can't wait to see her again someday and meet her Mr. Courtney! Praying for the family and everyone who's lives she touched over the years.

I will never be able to include here what Mrs Courtney has meant to me. My life is forever changed because she loved the Lord, loved my parents, and loved and educated me. She was my teacher, principal, and place of comfort at school from k-12 and even after graduation always met me with a warm squeeze of a hug , a sincere I love you, and encouragement for my endeavors. She was the first person to call me an artist, and I took her words to heart. Because of her talent and teaching I am able to be an artist today. Even as I write this I use skills she taught me in watercolor, choosing colors for my landscapes to create depth, remembering how she hated orange, and it makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye. I loved her laugh and her always honest opinions. How she would sit and spend time with each of us individually, completely attentive, figuring out a theological argument, drawing a lily, or citing a paper. (I just broke this sentence up because she would have said it was a run on sentence.)I rely on what she taught me and the example she set every day now that I think about it, and I know many others do as well. Her influence was vast and enduring because of her intellect, faithfulness, and heart. I will always miss you Mrs Courtney, rest well in peace with your love and your Savior.

Mrs. Courtney was such an inspiration to so many! I had the privileges' of having her for Art from 4th - 12th grade, Also, History, English, and Bible my Junior year. She was a fan of grammar (Which I'm still not the best at but learned a lot from her!) There were 2 huge things she taught me. 1. Love God with all you've got! 2. You can make a piece of art! I'm now a florist and making art everyday. I love to think of the memories I have with her and realize that she gave me my art start. One other very nice memory I have of her is when I was sitting next to her in class one day she took her arm and put it around me and said "I think you are turning into such a nice young man". She made me feel confident that day that I'm good and will do good for others. That was Mrs. Courtney a great person and inspiration for others. She will be dearly missed but I know she is walking the streets of Gold with God and back wither husband. I'm so sorry for your loss and will continue to pray for your family!

Our sympathies and prayers go out to the family of Mrs. Courtney. We were saddened to hear of her passing, but grateful for the godly life she lived out in front of others. She was an amazing teacher to our son Braden, and especially encouraged him in his art talent as well as his love for the real history of our country. One of the last things she told us on his graduation day in 2020 was that she had a prayer list of all her graduates, and prayed for them every day. We appreciated her testimony and sincerity, and we know that it is prayers like this that sustain our children as they go out into the world. What a joy it is to know that Mrs. Courtney is with her Savior in heaven, and we will see her again one day!

I just learned today, Jan. 3, of Nancy's passing. My deepest sympathy to her family. She and Tom, before he passed, supported me financially and prayerfully for many years in my ministry with One Mission Society. I was thrilled a few years ago when she came to the Indianapolis area and I was blessed to have lunch with Nancy and another OMS missionary whom she supported. She has touched many lives for Christ through her giving and prayers. I know she will be deeply missed, but I'm so thankful that we can rest in knowing she was welcomed home, into the arms of Jesus.
