Mary Virginia Herron, 86, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Mary Jane Brooks Care Center North with her daughter Kim by her side. Born May 19, 1930 in Detroit, she leaves three children, Daniel (Deborah nee Boyd) of Oxford OH, Kim Morgan (Charles) of Wintersville, and George (Kyle Dawn nee Williams) of Madison, OH along with seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Her sister Sinovia Netotian also survives. A 1948 Wintersville High School graduate, Mary was predeceased by her husband George in 1989 and infant daughter Olivia Anne. Raised by her immigrant grandparents, Rosella and Dan Vincent from Romania, Mary was retired from Steubenville City Schools where she worked as a secretary at Grant and then Roosevelt Schools. When her children were growing up, she and her husband were very active in both Harding and Big Red band parents. An opinionated and vocal advocate for the downtrodden and oppressed, Mary stood for and lived her life by a number of principles including "don't ever forget where you come from." She also reminded people that "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions." Mary and George raised their family in Steubenville's First Congregational Church on Pleasant Heights and then Zion United Church of Christ downtown after the churches merged. Once the children were grown, she returned to the Roman Catholic faith in which she had been raised. Never anticipating living this long, Mary saw most of her dear friends pass before her. Yet, she enjoyed a full life after she was widowed twenty-eight years ago. She travelled extensively with her children and was able to visit Europe numerous times, including England, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Her favorite city was Paris, though she also had a fondness for London. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. with Msgr. Gerald Calovini officiating. Entombment at Fort Steuben Burial Estates. Memorials may be directed to Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland OH 43943.

We are so sorry for your loss. We are so blessed to have had them with us for so long but it's still very hard. They are both at peace with their hubbys again. I know that is what Ruthie wanted. Our kids are still here and I just had a minute to check on your situation. We will be sending a donation to Valkey Hospice. For your mom and for ours. They were amazing.

You have our deepest sympathies! Your mom was one of the sweetest ladies we have ever met. Mary was so accepting of our family. It will be sad not to see her at family gatherings but she will never be forgotten. She was very special to everyone! Her work on this earth is done but she is now reunited with her family, especially her beloved husband. Our Lord's plan for her wonderful life has been completed.
