Obituary For Mary Joan "Jo" Deist

Mary Joan "Jo" (Dougherty) Deist, age 78, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her home in Charlotte, NC. Joan was born September 7, 1930 in Summerfield, Ohio, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Mary E. (Miracle) Dougherty. Joan was preceded in death (May 7, 2009) by her faithful and loving husband of 58 years, James A. Deist, whom she married on February 17, 1951 in Steubenville. Joan was first and foremost a homemaker. She also served as Secretary for the Home Builders Association of Ohio Valley. She was a charter member of Starkdale Presbyterian Church and was very active in the activities of the church for many years. She was also active with her husband in the Shrine Club, and was a member of the Ladies' Oriental Shrine, in Williams Country Club, and Cadiz Country Club. Joan also enjoyed her friends as a member of the Holly Twig. Surviving are her daughters, Cynthia Lynn Pesta, ( married to Donald R. Pesta, Jr. and their children, Megan Leigh Pesta, Erin Ashley Pesta Jones, son-in-law Vincent Paul Jones, and Scott Jameson Pesta) and Mary Jo Hendricks, (married to Michael K. Hendricks and their children, Jonathan Michael Hendricks and Allison Jayne Hendricks) and sister Edith Dougherty. Mrs. Deist will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Robert Shearer officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery.
