Lucille P. Smith was born in August 1925 in Holiday’s Cove, WV. The second child and first daughter of Pauline Beatrice (Vale) and Holmes W. Hair. She passed away on February 5, 2023 at
The Laurels Nursing Facility She graduated from Weir High School in 1943 with a focus on business and went to work as a telephone operator with The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone
Company of West Virginia. Lucille met her husband of 46 years when her cousin thought she would be a good match for a friend from his church. She later married Charles Smith in 1953 and
moved to Steubenville where she would reside for the next seventy years. Friday nights in the fall meant Big Red football games where she enjoyed seeing friends and watching the marching
bands. For over fifty years, she and Chuck held season tickets at Harding Stadium. She was a devoted member of the Fifth Street United Methodist Church and later Wintersville United Methodist
Church. Rarely would a Sunday pass when she would not be in the pew for the morning service. A devoted Pittsburgh sports fan, Lucille enjoyed watching Steelers, Penguins and Pirates games
on television. Her favorite college teams were West Virginia and Ohio State. She was an award winning Avon Representative. Many of her customers became friends and those friendships lasted
well beyond her 25 years with Avon. Lucille enjoyed being with her family and friends. She was always there for them, cooking meals and visiting them as they aged. Her favorite season was
summer when she could picnic, swim, and enjoy the long days outdoors, concerts at Fort Steuben and taking in the fireworks on July 4. Another thing she loved about summer was growing
tomatoes. She took great pride in the planting and harvesting of her crops. She never missed a chance to go shopping. Finding a bargain at Boscov’s or Robinson Township gave her great
pleasure. Lucille also enjoyed activities at the Steubenville Prime Time Center, always taking advantage of the bus trips, which gave her a chance to see many new and interesting sights around
the area. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother James Hair and her sister Marjorie (Hair) Greco both of Weirton. Surviving are a daughter Judy (Smith) Bogad,
granddaughter Pauline Bogad of Philadelphia, step-son Ronald Smith of Steubenville, sister Dorothy (Hair) Miller of Indianapolis and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses and aids at the Laurels for all of the care they provided in Lucille’s final days. The staff at Southern Care Hospice provided invaluable support and comfort
during this difficult time. A gathering of friends and family will be held later this summer. Donations may be made in Lucille’s name to the Urban Mission Ministries, Inc. 311 North 6th Street

Lucille was a wonderful, kind and caring woman. She was a great friend to my mother, Betty, and a wonderful mother to Ron and Judy. May she rest now in peace and may her memory be eternal.

My condolences to Judy and Ron and family. Lucille was my cousin and my sisters and I remember what good times we had as children at family reunions with Lucille, her parents and siblings. Lucille was a great lady and fondly remembered by all.
