Lloyd Marion “Pappy” Bruns, 92, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away July 29, 2009 peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Lloyd was born on August 26, 1916 in Greenup, IL to Herman A. and Anna Lubber Bruns. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carolyn (Eminhizer) Bruns in 1986; brother Ernest in 1993; sister Bessie Blanchard in 1998; and brother Raymond in 2008. A member of the United Staes Army’s storied 1st Infantry Division, Lloyd bravely fought in the following campaigns during WWII; Normandy (first wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day), Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe, and the Battle of the Bulge. For his service Lloyd was awarded the Silver Battle Star, the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Belgian government awarded him the Order of Leopold II, Chevalier with Palm and the Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm. Lloyd worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Bruns Coal Company owned by his brother Ernest. They also worked on road projects locally on the widening of St. Route Seven North of the Fort Steuben Bridge and the U.S. Post Office on Franklin Avenue. Lloyd retired in 1977 from Ohio Operating Engineers Local 18. One of Lloyd’s very favorite things to do was breakfast at Bob Evans. He attributed his longevity to eating oatmeal there regularly. He especially enjoyed being warmly greeted by all the employees there. He knew the founder of Bob Evans and frequented his original restaurant. Lloyd is survived by his close friends and caregivers John (Tina) DiBacco of Steubenville; great nephew Ernest Bruns of Zanesville, OH; great niece Amy Girardot of West Chester, OH. Although there is no visitation, friends are invited to attend Funeral services at Shorac Funeral Home (Formerly McClaves), 611 N. 4th Street, Steubenville 11a.m. on Saturday with Rev. Robert Shearer officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by Hopedale American Legion Post 682. Lloyd will be fondly remembered as a dear friend, good neighbor and a hero. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to: Valley Hospice, 380 Summit Ave., Steubenville, OH 43952 in Lloyd’s honor.

I told Pappy many of times that he was not just like a grandfather to me but much more. He was my friend, neighbor, advisor, and a father to both of my dear parents. It was a honor to have known this brave soldier and an honor to have been part of his honor guard giving him his final salute. Always in my heart, Dion
