Lester “Smitty” Smith 88 of Wintersville, Ohio died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Trinity West. He was born in New Cumberland, WV on August 5, 1915 a son of the late Edgar and Elizabeth Friend Smith. He was retired from Weirton Steel and attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Smitty served in the Army during WWII, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient. He also held membership in American Legion Argonne Post 33 and D.A.V. Smitty was preceded in death by one brother Robert Smith and one sister Thelma Ward. Surviving are his wife of 63 years Pauline Blaner Smith; children Gary L. (Mary Lucille) Smith of Wintersville, Leianne (Lee) Pownall of Wintersville, Kathy (Ken) Smith of San Diego, CA; C. Robbie Smith of Bloomingdale, OH; nine grandchildren Lesley Pownall, Bryan Pownall, Renee Smith, Dr. Shannon Smith, Lona Rae Smith, Kari Lynn Smith, Lauriann Smith, Robert Smith and A.J. Smith; and one niece Betty Chellow. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services 9:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church with Msgr. Gerald E. Calovini officiating. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio Argonne Post 33 will conduct military services at cemetery chapel.
