Leni B. Vukmir labored tirelessly for her entire existence. Even at the conclusion of her well lived life, she fought until the end; and was serene on her day of passing on November 26, 2008 at her residence with her children at her bedside. Born September 11, 1931, Leni, daughter of Rade and Anka Stepanovich Beukovich, residing with her brother Vladimir moving from Slack Street to 2666 Cleveland Ave. in Steubenville, Ohio, her home, a wonderful substantial dwelling filled with friends and family. Always proud of her endeavors, she had a short-lived career as a fashion model in New York City residing on Staten Island. She returned to her beloved home and an industrial occupation at Weirton Steel Co. working as a tin flopper. She married Matthew Vukmirovic on July 6, 1958 relocating to 393 Center Grange Road in Center Township, PA in a beautiful self-constructed home with a stone fireplace and artist-painted oriental wall mural centerpiece. Her life then shifted focus to her two children, Rade and Alana Vukmir, who achieve success as a physician and medical records administrator respectively. Unfortunately sadness was a part of the tapestry of her life, her beloved brother, Vlad, a petroleum engineer, succumbed to appendicitis at the age of 36 on Christmas Eve of 1965, a tragedy from which she never truly recovered. Likewise, her beloved father Rade left her on December 21, 1975 after a bout of pneumonia and mother Anka on August 18, 1981 after a long bout with congestive heart failure. Leni had cared for both parents. Lastly, husband Matthew was taken tragically in an industrial accident at Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. on January 3, 1973 solidifying her sorrow. This event left her with the seeming impossible struggle of raising two young children herself while maintaining hazardous industrial occupations at Phoenix Glass Co. and Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. She worked steady night turn to stay available to her children as well as maintaining a household. However, she enjoyed friends and family, often hosting elaborate celebrations of holidays, birthdays and graduations at her home, featuring an abundance of homemade food, baked goods and decorations. Family was the centerpiece of her life and she treasured the time spent with nieces Suzanne and Vanessa Beuk, great niece Savannah Beuk Elliott and nephews Steve and Sava Vukmaravich. Likewise her extended family included cousin John “Peppy” Stepanovich, his wife Maria and their children George, Deanna and Christina. She also enjoyed spending time with Kumovi Boya, Diane, Nadine, Amy & Fred Vignovich; Mitch Vignovich; Bessie, Cynthia, Dan & Penny Bratich and Kumovi Marie King. But she was truly affected by the loss of her favorites George (Duro) Stepanovich; Kum Fred Vignovich, and Sam, Brian, Mitt, Bud and John Hayden. Her talents were numerous and included exemplary cooking and baking skills, being remembered for Baba’s fried chicken and apple strudel as well as her own lasagna. She was the “best” woman driver of the era, being fearless in the snow and ice. Her love of pets was known with her dogs Homerun, Benji and Biarritz. No one who knew her would forget her drive towards fierce independence and the crucial importance of education for her children, relatives and neighbors. She always placed the needs of Rade and Alana above her own until the end. These things we remember from her proud legacy : she was a steelworker, she was Serbian, she had a desire to help others and the ability to stay independent until the end. However, the attribute we will miss the most was best described by cousin Vi Hayden “ Leni will laugh with you during happy times and cry with you during sad times, whenever you feel she will feel with you” Mom, your job is well done and complete. It is okay to go now. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Saturday from noon until the time of services at 12:30 p.m. with Very Rev. Rade Merick of Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church and Very Rev. Stefan Stepanov of St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio(Shorac 740.264.0563)

Condolences to Rade from a childhood playmate in Steubenville. Judging from the beautifully-written obituary, your mother was indeed a remarkable woman. (Though I no longer live in the Ohio Valley, I do try to keep up on events occuring there...and, by the way, I met you about forty years ago through my neighbor, Jim Sierawski!) May God bless and console your entire family. Sincerely, Patricia Demjan

I was captured by the eloquence of the writing in the obituary of your beloved mother, Leni. My regret is that I did not meet her, but somehow feel that I know her. Her life's story reminds me so much of that of my parents--their challenges and, above all, their being overcomers! God Bless you. Joe Cuomo
