Obituary For Lawrence L. "Boogie" Thompson

Lawrence L. "Boogie" Thompson died Saturday, January 18, 2014 in Sarasota, Florida.  He was 83 years of age.  No matter where life took him, he always called Steubenville home. Born October 2,1930 in Steubenville, he was the son of Lawrence and Thelma Thompson.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Jamie.  He grew up in the Pleasant Heights area, and graduated from Steubenville High School.  Active in hunting and all sports, he always enjoyed sharing stories of his teammates and his favorite coach Ang Vacarro.  After high school, he worked summers in the open hearth furnace area of Wheeling Steel with his father.   Lawrence graduated from Bowling Green State University, where he continued his basketball career.  Following college, he joined the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain.  After his military service, he returned home to join Titanium Metals Corporation of America in Toronto.  In 1969 he left the valley to accept a position with Ford Motor Company's Monroe Stamping Plant.  He remained there for 30 years, retiring in 1999.  From there, he and wife Laura retired in Sarasota where he swam every day. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Laura (Sticker) Thompson of Sarasota; two sons, Larry (Rose) Thompson of Monroe, Michigan and fellow Marine David (Monica) Thompson of Oceanside, California; two daughters, Cathy Thompson of Southeast Michigan and Sally (Michael) Lamb of Nashville, Tennessee; eight grandchildren and a brother, William (Dolores) Thompson of Fairfield, Ohio. Friends may call at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 12:30 p.m., with Rev. The family asks that in lieu of flowers or donations, you simply keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.

I grew up in Steubenville and was a teammate of "Boog's" on our high school football and basketball teams. Attended Bowling Green State University with him and we graduated in the class of 1952. He was always "Boog" to his teammates, never Lawrence or Larry. He was a joy to be around and a great team player. I shall miss him. My sincere condolences to Laura and his entire family.
