Virgina Bougher Smith, age 90, died on Friday, April 24, 2020 at Maplewood Assisted Living in Chardon, Ohio, where she had been living for 4 years. She was born on March 20, 1930. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert E. Smith. They lived in Sunset Gardens in Wintersville, Ohio, where they built a house together and raised their three daughters, Debbie, Barb, and Lee Ann. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Paul Bougher and Katherine Reid Fulton.

Virginia graduated from Steubenville Big Red in 1949. She was a member of the Rainbow Girls and worked as a seamstress at The Hub in Steubenville. She loved to sew and garden. Virginia was an amazing cook and baker.

She was a member of the Steubenville Art Association. Virginia was a member of the Heart of Ohio Tole from 1984-2011. She was a member of the National Society of Tole & Decorative Painters from 1983-2011. She offered her talent as an art teacher for many years both in her home and out in the community. For many years, she entered the Jefferson County Fair and won numerous blue ribbons. Among the many paintings she has done, a porcelain Easter egg that she painted was chosen to be given to President and Barbara Bush as a gift for each grandchild. She has a heart-shaped tin piece decorated with an American Eagle and the flag displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum. She also was chosen to send a Christmas ornament to President and Hillary Clinton for a White House tree.

Virginia was the mother to her children: Debbrah (Bob) Zenz of Hiram, OH, Barbara (Jack) Zenz of Willoughby, OH, and Lee Ann (Don) VanCuren of Portage, IN; eight grandchildren: Molly (Marcus) Smith, Emily (Michael) DeCaro, Katie (Sherwin) Liang, Sarah (Jessie) Arp, and Gretchen (Kevin) Hollesh, Jack (Nadia) Zenz, Josh (Litany) Zenz and Scott (Jaclyn) Zenz. She had twelve great grandchildren: Savannah and Zac Smith, Alissa and Gianna DeCaro, Caden and Xavier Hollesh, Maverick Arp, Arianna and Giulia Zenz, Laura and Lincoln Zenz, and Dalton Zenz. Virginia was the older sister of James Bougher, Paula Nutter, and Michael Bougher.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Maplewood Assisted Living, in Chardon, Ohio, for taking such good care of our mother. We appreciate the kindness and love shown by the staff. Maplewood has continued to maintain a healthy and safe environment during this time of Coronavirus-19. Due to the Coronavirus-19 pandemic, a private service with only the immediate family will be held at Fort Steuben. Memorial donations in our mother’s name may be directed to the St. Jude Hospital (donors@stjude.org)

Deb,Barb,Lee,& family,Girls, what an extraordinary Mom she was. We knew her as Ginny, a lady of many talents, of whom touched my life growing up. Always sharing her time patiently teaching her precious natural ability of art in many forms, still managing to prepare great meals for her family. Our sympathy. LOVE to all.

To the family of Virginia Smith.  I was saddened to hear of your mother's passing.  I am a member of Heart of Ohio Tole (HOOT) and Virginia was a friend and a wonderful giving teacher.  Her painting was always beautiful.  I am sure she had many good memories as I have of her.  You have my sympathy and she will be missed.  Phyllis Higgins

My prayers are with you at this sad time. Your parents were such good friends and neighbors for so many years and spent so many parties together on New Years eve. Sunset Gardens now is mostly all new people now. Gob bless all of you.
