Obituary For Jon D. Brandt

Jon D. Brandt died Saturday, September 19, 2015, in his sleep from diabetes-induced hypoglycemia. He was born August 29, 1960, at Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of the late Karl E. Brandt and Mary Alice Brandt of Steubenville. He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1978, where he was a member of the wrestling team. In 1983, he received a B.A. degree from the Ohio State University. Mr. Brandt was employed at the Brandt Motor Company from 1976 until 2005. The Brandt Motor Company was founded in 1919 by Mr. Brandt's great-grandfather Harry D. Brandt with his six sons, Harold, Fred, Bruce, Ralph, Bert, and Dean, and he was in the fourth generation of the family to work there, alongside his father Karl Brandt and cousins Paul Brandt and Charles Brandt in the third generation. After 2005, he continued his career in auto sales and currently worked at Team Buick GMC in Wintersville. Mr. Brandt became an Eagle Scout in 1978. He was a member of the Steubenville Rotary Club, which named him a Paul Harris Fellow, and he served as its president. He had 29 years of perfect attendance. Mr. Brandt, who was affectionally called "Jon Jon," "Jonny," and "Rem" by his many friends, was a well-known figure in Steubenville. He knew many residents by name and was known for being a joyful person with a big heart, for friendly greetings, a cheerful word, and having a big smile, and for the bow ties he sometimes wore. Many friends have shared that their days were always brightened by encountering him, and his family agrees. His interests included gardening, listening to the blues, and riding his Harley with friends on Poker Runs for charity. He was diagnosed with Type I diabetes when he was eight years old but never let it affect his sunny outlook on life. Mr. Brandt is survived by his mother, Mary Alice Baker Brandt, and sister Stacie Brandt of Costa Mesa, California, cousin Paul Brandt, aunt Glada Moloney of Singer Island, Florida, his uncle Albert Baker of Schaumberg, Illinois, and six cousins Mitchell Moloney, Sean Moloney, Todd Moloney, Conrad Baker, Andrew Baker, and Chris Baker. He was a long-time member of the La Belle View United Methodist Church and later an active member of the Wintersville United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Clint Quillen officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery. Charitable donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Urban Mission, 301 North Fifth Street, Steubenville, Ohio 43952, urban mission.org.

Jon, Jon will surely be missed by all that have come into contact with him over the years as well as I as a former friend and Eagle Scout! Jon, Jon and I have had many of good times back in the day of are youth as former Boy Scouts, we both had great times in Troop 3 and are time down in Cimarron, New Mexico at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch! Spending two weeks with Jon, Jon in a tent was a real experience, the true laughter and jokes never ended! He could almost get away with anything with that smile of his. I remember the time when the bears got into are groups food and supplies hanging over a tree branch about 25 or 30 ft off the ground and the bears ate all the food & powder soap to wash dishes with! The following morning outside of are tents there was a mess left behind by the bears, wrappers, paper and of course you know for we had to hand wash the tents in a near by creek then hang to dry. My prayers and sympathy go out to Jon, Jon's family and mother and sister! God, BlessPaul

Our deepest sympathies go out to the Brandt family. Jon Jon had that ability to make one smile no matter how bad their day, their life circumstances or how sad they were. That was the special quality that defined Jon Jon Brandt. The man simply exuded a positive and happy aura about him. It is such a sad time for those that had the rich and rewarding experience to be a friend of Jon Jon's. Rest in peace Jon Jon. Many many people will miss you and many more that you had not yet met will be cheated out of missing a special man.

Oh my gosh, I am so so sad and so terribly sorry to learn of Remy's passing. My husband Kevin and I went to college with him, and he was always one of my favorite FIJI's. Remy is the one who gave me my nickname, "M.L." He lived down the hall from Kevin in the FIJI house, and since my maiden name was "Immel", he just ended up calling me M.L. Often he would shout my name down the hall when he knew I was there and he always made me laugh. He was such a character, always a smile on his face, a funny comment, an authentic interest in your story, and always always dressed in his starched button downs and pressed khakis that would arrive fresh weekly in a box. Loved him in his bow tie and horn rimmed glasses. Some of my favorite college memories have him in it. I'll never forget the way he brought the house down the year I chaired the Delta Gamma Anchor Splash. We held a body building competition for each fraternity, and Remy represented the FIJI's. All the other fraternities who took this stuff so seriously, were oiled up, flexing their bi-ceps, amd Remy arrived on stage in the FIJI Island Grand Poohba chair that was being carried on the shoulders by big FIJI OSU football players, and the guys lowered the chair, amd Remy got out, wearing his wrestling uniform, and began flexing his muscles like a big ham, and the entire crowd went wild. I remember being so proud to be part of the FIJI's, and loved that he did that and caused such a great uproar in the crowd. He was a gem of a person, he always made you feel good when you were around him. He was an unforgettable friend. Our prayers are with your family during this difficult time. We will miss him so... Love, M.L

I first met John in 1985 when my late wife and I purchased our first of many Buick's from Jon at the Brandt Motor Company. We were both impressed with his knowledge of the product and his genuine concern that we were happy with our purchase's. Beyond the business part, through the years Jon showed a genuine concern for our families health and well being, especially when my wife contracted cancer and I developed type 2 diabetes. On many occasions Jon would call and ask how my wife and I were doing. That is extremely rare for someone in that business to do. That's what made Jon so special. I will miss Jon's many attribute's, but most of all I will miss his friendship. Goodbye my friend. Respectfully, Harry McFarland, JR.

Yesterday @ a family dinner while discussing Jon's untimely passing, we realized that each of us had purchased at least one car from Jon, ours the most recent last summer. Loved Jon's phone calls, the most recent a few months ago, just to check in. His great smile & fun personality will be missed by all who crossed paths with him.
