John T. Smurda, 78, passed away at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital on Friday, June 12, 2026 with his family at his side. He was born in Steubenville on July 12, 1947 the son of John & Nellie Exterovich Smurda. He was a 1967 graduate of Steubenville High School.

John began his career in automobile sales at local dealerships before becoming a partner at J&J Dealership in Toronto, Ohio, where he worked until his retirement. He was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and ability to connect with people. John established many local friendships during his career.

Outside of work, John’s greatest happiness came from time spent with his family. He loved boating and water sports and created a lifetime of memories on the Ohio River with Suzanne and Ryan and his boating friends. Family vacations and travels together with his family brought him immense joy, and he valued those experiences above all else.

Preceding John in death were his parents and two sisters, Joan Phillipi & Eleanor Thomas.

John will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving and proud father, and a man whose kindness, generosity, and quiet strength touched many lives. His love for his family will remain a lasting legacy and source of comfort to those who knew him.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Suzanne Chichick Smurda; cherished son Ryan John Smurda; niece Janice (Jeff) Felton; sister-in-law Mitzi (late Bill) Seach; several nieces and nephews. John and Ryan shared a close bond built on love, respect, laughter and countless memories together.
