John Cucarese, Jr., 74, of Wintersville, Ohio passed away Friday January 22, 2021 at Weirton Medical Center due to complications from Covid-19.
He was born March 12, 1946 in Steubenville, OH, the youngest of five children of the late John and Grace Lamantia Cucarese, Sr.
John is survived by his wife Pamela L. Cowher Cucarese, his high school sweetheart whom he married August 19, 1967; daughter Jane M. (Jason) Hanlin of Toronto; son John W. (Erin) Cucarese of Coraopolis, PA; and three grandchildren: Megan Keenan of Washington, D.C., Charlie Keenan of Tampa, FL, and John “Camp” Cucarese, of Coraopolis, PA. He is also survived by four siblings, including a brother Joseph (Armatha) Cucarese, and sisters Mary Pulver of Weirton, WV, Ethel (Harry) Monigold of Wintersville, OH, and JoAnn (Art) Deiderich, of Lakewood, OH, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was the ultimate family man, patriot, friend and coworker. He deeply loved and was loved by all who knew him. He never missed his grandchildren’s activities, enjoyed all types of family gatherings and reunions, and loved animals, especially his late dogs, Bud and Buckeye, whom he treated like royalty.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart after suffering a gunshot wound in 1967. His friends and family will forever know and refer to him as a tough but kind Marine, as he both loved and fought with a warrior's mentality.
He retired from AT&T after 28 years of service and is fondly remembered by coworkers and customers. He was a 49 year member of the Polish Athletic Club and cherished the friendships formed there. He enjoyed hunting and running, often competing in races with family and friends throughout the tri-state area. John never met a stranger and was known for his ability to make a friend of everyone he met.
As per his request and with Covid concerns, there will be no visitation. His favorite charities included the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516 (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) and the Jefferson County Humane Society, 200 Airport Access Road, Wintersville, OH 43953 (https://jeffersoncountyhumanesociety.net).

My condolences to the Cucarese family. I met John several years ago running in several of the local area 5K and 10K's. He was always one of my favorite people to bump into around town and share a conversation. Thankfully, I ran into him this past fall at Jim Wood's park and was able to walk a few laps with him and share a final conversation. I'm now very glad for that time. John was a great man and will be missed.

John and I had a common relative, Owen Cucaarese. We were't related but it always felt that way. No mater where or when we always spoke or at least smiled and waved. He was always a pleasant man and his presence was felt with warmth and an appreciation of knowing him. My condolences to family and loved ones, your loss is great.
