John Benko, 94, of Wintersville, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 20, 2014 at his home. He was born September 18, 1920 in Old Forge, PA the son of the late Samuel & Mary Chincilla Benko. John was a devoted member of Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church. He served in US Army during WWII under the command of Gen. George Patton’s 6th Armored Division battling in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. After his military discharge, John came to Mingo Junction, studied at Steubenville Business College and began his career at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel working as a stationary engineer, after attending classes and obtaining his Stationary Engineers License. Later he decided to take a correspondence course and received a diploma from Sprayberry Academy of Radio & Television in Chicago.John also worked as a first operator for Linde Air Products and Mingo Oxygen Co. He retired on September 18, 1985 and said “Retirement is the best job he ever had…” He was also had an amazing record with the Unionport Masonic Lodge 333 Master Mason (Sept. 16, 1966) and Worshipful Master (1972); Royal Arch Mason (1/12/67); Knight Templar (2/6/67), Royal and Select Master (2/16/67); Excellent High Priest (6/75); Eminent Commander (6/6/77); Illustrious Master (6/82) and Knight York Cross Honour (11/82). John was preceded in death by his sisters Ann Charak, Mary Petrocelli, Josephine Keller and Cathy Ignac.John is survived by his wife Dorothy A. Mamula Benko; niece Lori (Mel) Timberlake of Brilliant, OH and nephew Mark (Cristal) Vincent of Berlin Center, OH; sisters Eileen (Robert) Alloggia of Richmond, OH & Jean (Jim) Lott of Wintersville, OH.Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Wednesday 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:15 a.m. until the time of services at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Very Rev. Rade Merick officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery.Masonic services 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad will conduct graveside honors.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Holy Resurrection Church.
