Obituary For James W. "Bud" McClave

One of the greatest of the Greatest Generation, James W. “Bud” McClave passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Carriage Inn in Steubenville.Bud was born September 16, 1922 in Canfield, Ohio to the late Elmer Weir and Helen Dickson McClave.  He attended Ohio State before enlisting in the Air Force.  After intense training he was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant of the 8th Air Force/489th BG.  Bud served as the navigator of the lead B24 bomber stationed in England, flying 30 missions in the European theater.  He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant prior to his honorable discharge following the War.After WWII, Bud attended Ohio State, graduating with a degree in Ceramic Engineering.  He then moved his young family to Steubenville, Ohio where he served as President of Peerless Clay Corp., a ceramic sewer pipe manufacturing company located in Toronto, Ohio.  Bud proved to be an astute and caring businessman, always treating employees with great respect and appreciation.  When the industry hit tough times with the incursion of PVC and cement pipe, many of Peerless’ competitors went out of business.  Bud led the consolidation of several smaller plants to form Superior Clay Corp. in Uhrichsville, serving as President of Superior from 1969 to 1988, diversifying the product offerings to remain one of the few survivors in the industry. Bud was a loving and very active father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He spent endless hours playing games, being in the swimming pool, taking kids to miniature golf, treating all with ice cream – just “being” with kids was a source of joy to Bud and he became a “Pied Piper” to them all.  One of Bud’s nephews put it well: “I have an image of Uncle Bud in my mind, and that will always be the smiling guy with a bounce in his step who made us all feel good just by being in the room.”Bud is survived by his wife, Hetty (White) McClave, to whom he was married for 70 years.  Bud is also survived by three siblings: Dorothy Ballantine, Ann McClave, and Elmer “Skip” McClave, II.; his son, Jim (Mary Jay) McClave of Gainesville, FL; his daughter, Barb (Bill) Ware of Chapel Hill, NC; grandchildren, “Joey” (Jeff) Furlow, Will (Amber) McClave, Kristin (Case) Hill, Jamie Baldwin, Michael Whiston, Laura Whiston, Anna Whiston; great-grandchildren, Caryss Baldwin, Celia Furlow, Jake and Luke McClave, Zach and Beckett Baldwin, Nicholas Hill; step-grandchildren, Emily Driver, Matt Ware, Erin Kays; step-great-grandchildren, Alex and Erica Driver, Andrew Kays.   Bud was predeceased by his daughter, Dianne McClave and granddaughter, Amy Whiston.Bud’s family is grateful for the loving care he received at Steubenville’s Carriage Inn over the last months of his life.  They are also most grateful for the loving friendship of Ray Scurry, who began as a driver for Bud and Hetty, and quickly became their friend and angel.Reverend Charles Whiston, father of three of Bud’s grandchildren, provided a resonant description of Bud: “A gentle man of such great integrity and love for family and others... always true to his word.”  May our Bud rest in peace, in a place made better by his presence.Services will be held at Starkdale Presbyterian Church, 4600 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, Ohio on Monday, November 3.  The viewing will be held at 11am, with the service immediately following at noon.  Following burial at the Fort Steuben Cemetery, a lunch reception will be held at the Starkdale Presbyterian Church.  Arrangements entrusted to Dunlope – Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Urban Mission, 301 N. 5th Street, Steubenville, OH 43952.

Dear Mack and Family, I was saddened to read about the death of your Dad. Although i never had the pleasure of meeting him, I so enjoyed reading his funeral notice. He was quite a person and very well loved. May happy memories sustain you at this time. Love, Maura

I had the honor of meeting and becoming friends with Bud and Hetty over 20 years ago. They are two of the finest and most sincere people I have ever had the privilege to know. God bless you both.

"Dad" has been a part of my life of my life for the last 26+ years, and my only "Dad" for the last 19 years. He always treated me a "real" son; thanks Dad.

I am saddened to learn of Bud's passing. Your family added to our "Snug Harbor" family. Remember the tennis tournaments and the old trophy coffee cup given to the winner?? I send blessings and prayers for your family. Hetty, you and Bud were such a handsome couple.

I have good memories of the McClave family from Snug Harbor a few years ago. Time flies and I have thought about a beautiful mom and dad that were my neighbors. Gaye
