Obituary For Howard M. "Bub" Clutter

Howard M. “Bub” Clutter, 83, of Steubenville, Ohio died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at his home with his family by his side.  He was born March 4, 1926 in St. Marys, WV a son of the late Clarence J. and Margerie Bayles Clutter.  Bub was the owner and operator of American Cleaners of Wintersville and Clutter Tile.  He was also known as the “Corn Man”.  He was a Marine veteran serving during WW II in Comapany I, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Division as a Corporal and was a survivor of the battle of Iwo Jima.  He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the Combat Action Ribbon.  He was a member of Amazing Grace Church of Christ, Follansbee, WV; Masonic Lodge #45 and Wintersville American Legion Post # 557.  He was the founding member of the Band of Brothers Breakfast Club and a former member and past president of Wintersville High School Boosters Club.  Preceding Bub in death was his wife Caralane Anna Geary Clutter and brother Edward Dean Clutter.  Surviving are his two daughters Terri (Dr. Ted) Starkey of Wintersville, OH and Erin (Marc) DeSantis of Steubenville, OH; son Geary Clutter of Steubenville, OH; four grandsons Brant (Andrea) Starkey of Mingo Junction, OH, Dr. Ryan (Christie) Starkey of Steubenville, OH, Trenton Starkey stationed in Norfolk, VA and Cullen DeSantis of Steubenville, OH; five great grandchildren Camdyn, Brayden, Lynden, Abigail and Ian Starkey; special friend Sara Bogard of Calcutta, OH; several nieces, nephews and cousins and Band of Brothers Breakfast Buddies George Wilson, Jim McClain, Abe Bryan, Don Bradley, Jock Dickenson, Leonard Ellis, Charlie Green, Ken Kromer, Len Masci, Don McLaughlin, Ron Millanti, Sal Pate, Bob Phillipson, Keith Price, Fred Rogers, Ray Simmons, Frank Vallera, Chuck Warrington, George Glikes, Butch Irvin, Clyde Morelli, Jay Kolenc and Art Panepucci.  Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville Friday 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. where a service will be held Saturday    10 a.m. with Minister Bill Rhodes officiating. Burial at Fort Steuben where military honors will be provided by I & I Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines out of Moundsville, WV.  Memorial donations may be directed to Valley Hospice 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, OH 43943 or Amazing Grace Church of Christ, PO Box 481, Weirton, WV 26062.

    Mr.Clutter was a very nice man, I enjoyed his corn that he sold up at his place of business alot. Have done alot of welding jobs for Mr.Clutter, was always kind to me. GOD SPEED MR. CLUTTER. Good bye David RAYBURN AND BOYS.

    To the family, I have great memories of Howard coming into AFSB and yelling at us from the front door. He always made me smile everytime I saw him. He was truly something special and will be missed by many, including me. You have my sympathy. Jodi Mack

    Hi Sorry to hear about your loss. He was a nice man and I bought corn from him. FYI-I work at Schiappa Library and we have both Howard's name and Edward's name in our book "Jefferson County Veterans of WWII".     Dearest Terri, Erin, Geary: My heartfelt sympathy to you and your dear families at the passing of your beloved father. A good man, indeed, who was respected and loved by many.     Erin, Mark, and family of Mr. Clutter, I was so sorry to read of the passing of your dad. Please accept my condolences. I always got a big kick out of your dad when he would ride by my house on Brockton Rd. on his scooter and he would wave as he went by.

    To the family, We will miss Bub greatly, but we know he is in a better place. He is probably fishing with Carroll as we speak. We will never forget him putting the fishing lure in Carroll's casket. I hope they get to use it in heaven. God Bless you all and stay strong in these tough times.
