Harriet C. McElroy, 78, of Wintersville, Ohio died Monday, May 20, 2013 at her home. She was born March 17, 1935 in Steubenville, Ohio a daughter of the late Harry W. Birrell and Alice G. Caven. Harriet was a member of Brentwood United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and helped as a church camp chaperone. She graduated from Steubenville High School in 1953. Harriet was a Cub Scout Leader, a member of the Steubenville Garden Club and a volunteer at the Ohio Valley Hospital as one of the Pink Coats transporting patients. She was a member of the Card Club with her good friends for over 45 years and enjoyed playing Euchre at the FOP. She worked at Carlisle’s, Goodwill, Board of Elections and the Herald Star in the 50’s. Harriet loved camping, boating and fishing with her grandchildren at Leesville Lake. Harriet was preceded in death by her son James D. McElroy on June 22, 1985; sister-in-law Emily Birrell; nephew Stephan Birrell and two brothers-in-law James Delbert McElroy and Harry Dean McElroy. Surviving are her husband of 58 years Albert D. McElroy, whom she married at Calvary United Methodist Church in Steubenville; son Mark McElroy of Wintersville, OH; daughter Cathy (Chris) Norton of Toledo, OH; four grandchildren Michael (Mindy) Norton of Luckey, OH, Dr. Matthew Norton of Farmington Hills, MI, Cassandra (Mike) Kupniewski of Toledo, OH and Andrew (Lindsay) Norton of Sylvania, OH; four great grandchildren Connor, Marlee, Jillian and Kenleigh; two brothers Harry W. Birrell of California and Walter G. (Alice) Birrell of Steubenville, OH; many nieces and nephews and her loyal dogs Maggie and Max. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville on Wednesday 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. where a funeral Service will be held Thursday 10 a.m. with Rev. Bill Westling officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be directed to Charity Hospice.

Uncle Darl and family, I was devastated to hear of Aunt Harriet's passing. Uncle Darl, please try to stay strong. I'm so sorry I won't be able to attend the calling hours and funeral to honor her and pay my respects. Please know that you and your family are always in my heart, i am so glad that Mom and Aunt Harriet had the chance to have a good long phone conversation a few weeks ago.
