Grace Van Kirk or in other words "grandma" was a loving, strong, and welcoming person who wasn't afraid to stand up for what she believed in. She was definitely one of a kind and always made me feel loved despite being geographically separated across the country. I will never forget our conversations about life, my birthday parties at the camper, how she ate my burnt marshmallows from the campfire, the way she called me "honey", the times she came to my defense as my dad teased me about spiders, and most importantly that fiery spirit. It was that spirit that made her fearless and it was her confidence that would always leave you feeling safe. Since I was a young boy, I always told her; "Grandma, if a robber broke into the house and if it was just you and me, I'd feel safe." She would just laugh and tell me "Well Tom, that's right". I always knew my grandma could protect me against anything. With that being said, we Van Kirks know, what grandma says, goes. It was like written law. With everything previously mentioned, my grandma was a wonderful woman who will always remain in my heart. Although I am saddened by this day; a part of me is at ease because I know she is finally reunited with grandpa. Grandma, I love you and please enjoy a hobo pie for me in heaven. This isn't goodbye forever but goodbye for now. When we meet again, there won't be any more goodbyes. Lastly, the thought of you looking down on us allows me to feel safe just like it did all those years ago. Even if a "robber broke into the house." Love Tommy
