Obituary For Gilbert Lee "Gibby" Thermes

Gilbert Lee, “Gibby” Thermes,75, lifelong resident of Wintersville, passed away Monday, July 22, 2019 at his residence of natural causes. He was born in Steubenville on January 15, 1944, a son of the late Gilbert and Jean Carnahan Thermes. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara E. Thermes, on February 21, of this year. Gibby and Barbara met in Junior high and had been together ever since. They were graduates of Wintersville High School and married for 55 years. Gibby worked as a crane operator at the 80 inch Wheeling Steel plant. He and Barbara, together, were owner and operators of Ohio Valley Answering Service, Steubenville Answering service, G & B Rentals, and Sunset Window Company. They began the Gil Thermes Fence Company and worked together for more than 53 years. Gibby served as Executive Director of the Big Brother Organization in the 1970's and was a member of the Steubenville Masonic Lodge #45; 32 degree Scottish Rite, and First Westminister Presbyterian Church, Steubenville. Gibby was known for his positive and congenial personality and with helping others in need. Often described as the “whistler"" as he whistled so often everywhere he went. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts. He is survived by his children; Lesa Costlow, Leslie Thermes and Tanner Thermes, sisters; Karen Ridgeway and Shelly (John) Polsinelli, and brother Jeff Thermes, brother in law Robert Harvey, and sister in law Bonnie DiDomenico, 3 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. As per Gibby's wishes, the family will be celebrating his life privately. Special thanks to Mark Morrow, his caregiver and Rev. Jason Elliot for all his help towards the family. Donations may be made in memory to First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 North 4th St. Steubenville, or Valley Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville.
