Obituary For George B. Byrum

George B. Byrum, 88, of Steubenville, Ohio died Monday, May 2, 2005 at The Forum at Knightsbridge in Columbus, Ohio. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 22, 1917 a son of the late Lee V. and Meda Bolton Byrum. George was a graduate of West Virginia University and served forty-two months in the US Army Air Force and Army Medical Administration Corps. during WWII. He served as assistant administrator of Ohio Valley General Hospital in Wheeling from 1946-1949 and as President of Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville from February 1949 until his retirement on March 1, 1985. George was a member, deacon and trustee of First Westminster U.P. Church; fifty year member of Masonic Lodge 33 AF&AM in Wheeling. A member of Steubenville Rotary, he was a Paul Harris Fellow and selected for the Rotary mural in the City of Murals. George had served as a board member of Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Distinguished Citizen Award in 1985. He also retained membership at Steubenville and William Country Clubs and was past president of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Preceding George in death were his wife Murdayne Marshall Byrum, whom he married on June 18, 1941 and she died August 26, 2003, and one brother James A. Byrum of Wheeling. George is survived by his daughter Barbara J. Byrum of Columbus, Ohio; son Mark M. (wife Mary) Byrum of McKees Rocks, PA and grandson James M. Byrum of Los Gatos, CA. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville on Friday from 2 p.m. until time of services at 4 p.m. with Rev. Susan Haseltine officiating.
