Obituary For Frank Lovinski

Frank Lovinski, 70, died suddenly at his home in Wintersville, OH on October 31, 2012.  He was born in Wheeling , WV to John and Laura Lovinski, he was educated at Wheeling Central, West Liberty and WVU. He stared his journalism career as a sports reporter but rose quickly through the ranks to become a newsroom executive in MD, OH, NY and MI.  He retired in 1997 as Managing Editor of the Detroit News.  Frank was an avid reader, traveler, photographer, artist, sports fan and birder who loved the outdoors.  He would journey any distance (often with unsuspecting family members) to find rare birds, see natural wonders, take in a minor sports event, visit a lesser known historic landmark or just to try a new beer.  He took copious photographs of his adventures, of his family and his wife’s garden.  Nearly every day he shared news articles, his photos, enthusiastic political opinions and bad jokes with appreciative family and friends.  Long before the internet, Frank utilized his journalistic skills to uncover his family’s roots dating back to 1771.  In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by  his brother, John, Jr. and a son Paul.  He is survived by his wife Claire Lupinetti Lovinski, his son Gregory (Noel) Lovinski of Kent, OH, his daughters, Paula Lovinski MD of Bedford, NH and Bethany Lovinski of Denver, CO, and his grandchildren Theodore, Sophia and Claire.  Also surviving, are his siblings Barbara (Tom) Weiskircher, Chuck (Trudi) Lovinski and very special in-laws Mary Louise Diefenbach, Jim Lupinetti, great aunts Dora McDermott, Virginia Diserio and sister-in-law Maureen Lovinski.  Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Rd., Wintersville, OH on Sunday from 2-6p.m. and Monday from 10a.m. until time of services at 11a.m. with Father Steven McKeown, Rector of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made to: Doctors Without Borders.

His laugh, his smile, his incredible mind, his wit, etc. will all be missed. One of my earliest memories of Uncle Frank was a day he brought this HUGE box of t-shirts to Grandma and Grandpa's house and had found a t-shirt for EVERY niece and nephew. I loved that shirt - white 3/4 length sleeves with a sports number on the front and back and flowers on the sleeves. What a cool uncle. Our prayers to Aunt Claire & family. Love, Teresa & Gary

Having only met Frank & Claire once, at their home, on a lovely summer weekend, I came to know Frank more through an email Klub of 5 friends/family members. He shared many things with our Klub- photos, humor, political& religious comments and pictures of his beloved grandchildren. I,too, remember his firm handshake when we met but could tell he was a kind soul. I had always hoped to see Frank and Claire again and his sudden departure brings great sadness for that lost opportunity. He will be remembered with heartfelt warmth. My husband Ken (Franks cousin) and I send our deepest sympathies to Claire and all of Franks family for the irreplaceable loss his passing brings. As the days and weeks go by, eventually may fond memories of Frank as husband, grandpa, father, sibling, and friend begin to ease the tears of grief and bring a smile to the hearts of those who still love and miss him.

On behalf of my children, Davietta (Coco) and Josiah Butty, I say to the Lovinski family: Our prayers are with you. Frank was not only my boss at the Detroit News, but he made me into what I am today. He was a teacher, a good listener and working with him helped me grow. He took my kids to baseball and football games. We will miss his friendship and his fatherly love.

The first thing I ever noticed about Frank was his handshake. It was very firm. But that didn't apply to his personality. He liked to have fun. I'll miss that.

Frank will be missed my myself and so many others he mentored and taught in Detroit at The Detroit News. I have great memories of us working together -- he was the boss -- putting out the Sunday newspaper, chasing breaking stories, debating headlines, stories and page layout. And he always left time for a good meal, good times and laughs. He will truly be missed--And Remembered. My deepest condolences to all of his family.

I worked at The Detroit News for 30 years and had the pleasure of knowing Frank and working with him in my role as Assistant to the Publisher Bob Giles. I loved Frank's stories - he was a great storyteller and I'm so sad to have not corresponded with him in recent years through facebook. He is dearly missed by me.

Frank was a life long friend. He was special guy with a great many interests. We had many great memories to share growing up together in our hometown of Triadelphia. I loved him like a brother and will think of him always. My prayers go to Claire and member of his family.

Frank was so very influential to me as a journalist and as a person. He played such a crucial role for me as I just started my career, and showed me you can be a boss, mentor and friend all at once. He challenged me, encouraged me, coached me and laughed with me. He not only had a huge influence on me, but also on an entire Detroit News newsroom of young, impressionable journalists. Most have gone on to other jobs or careers, but I know so many who carry Frank with them. We are all better people and journalists for having worked with him and for knowing him. I've been in touch with at least 40 people who worked with Frank since we all heard the news of his death. Here are some of the things they said, so that everyone -- especially you, Claire, and Frank's family -- can know just what an impact Frank had on all of us: * He was one in a million. * He really cared about the paper and just wanted us to do our best. * Frank was one of my favorite Detroit News editors. I was so happy to have recently re-connected with him through Facebook. He was truly one-of-a-kind. * Frank was a big part of The News family for me. * There's nobody I respect more in the newspaper business than Frank Lovinski. * When I think of my days at the News, I think of Frank. He was one of a kind and I am glad I knew him. * Frank challenged me -- all of us, I think -- to do better and to be better, sometimes with inspired cleverness, other times with the unexpected or uncomfortable. He had a great talent for asking abut the one thing you hadn't' thought about (he'd hate that sentence). He made life at The News interesting and rewarding. He made me think. * Frank was the best of the best. My friend, mentor and hero. Rest in peace, Frank. And to his family, my heart goes out to you. He was a very special man, and even 15 years and hundreds of miles removed from his daily presence, I feel such a loss -- but also feel so lucky to have known him.
