Frank C. Backel, 65, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away Monday, November 30, 2020 at Passavant Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. He was born July 10, 1955 in Steubenville, a son of the late Frank E. & Charlotte R. Thomas Backel. He was student of Jeffco Workshop and enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Frank never let his limitations define him, living with a larger than life attitude. He was a Boy Scout; a Special Olympics athlete, where he placed in track and long jump; and the best basketball player in the tri-state area. Basketball was Frank’s real passion, taking the team to state champion wins every year he played with the team. He was an avid bowler and bocce ball player. But he was more than all that to the people who knew and loved him. He had a smile that lit up a room.
Frank is survived by his sister Judy Backel of Mountain View, CA; brother Robert (Kim) Backel of Wheeling, WV; niece Michelle Jones, nephew Michael Jones, dear friend Vivian (Charlie) Snyder as well as many cousins and friends.
Private family services and burial followed at Union Cemetery.

Back in the early 80s when everybody used to play basketball at the Pleasant Heights courts at Murphy's field. Frankie always had a basketball with him practicing by himself mostly. I would pick him for my team run full court. His face would light up. You want me to play with you. I'd say damn right Frankie you are one of the best players out here. He'd say ok. I would show him the man that he had the guard and tell him offenses pass and pick opposite. He'd say okay I got you. Loved playing basketball with franki Frankie !! Love you buddy !!😪

I worked for the DD Board and have known Frankie for over 40 years. The staff would play our Special Olympic basketball team every year. I will always remember the time that I went up for a shot only to have Frankie block the shot right off my nose. I thought my nose was broke for sure! He was some player and a great guy. He will be missed. RIP

I've known you since forever, growing up on PH and you'd come to Fox's Pizza to chat. Later, anytime we saw each other, you would give a huge smile, wave and say hello. He always remembered my name, even after so many years passed without seeing each other! You were one of the most kind people I have ever known. RIP, dear Frankie. Your smile, laughter and true joy will be so missed.

I first knew Frankie from working in the pharmacy downtown several years ago. He would always seek me out and give me one of those great bear hugs. I ran into him a few years later in the apartment building where he lived. He had never forgotten me. I was greeted with that bear hug and that unforgettable smile. Frankie was one of a kind. One of the best! If everyone was like Frankie, this world would be a much better place. R.I.P. my friend.
