Exel Marcella Allender Weinman, passed away May 15, 2012 in Boise, ID.  She was born October 29, 1916 on her family’s farm 5 miles west of Elk City, OK, the 6th of 6 children. Her sister Cecil was the midwife.  She was the daughter of the late Arvel Sherman Allender and Roxy Pearl Gosney Allender.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings Cecil Roxy Allender Burwell, Herbert Arvel (Blenda) Allender, Christia Hysel Allender (Clyde) Crane, Beaulah Lucinda Allender (Sam) Wycoff and Chester Royal (Gloria) Allender.  Growing up Exel worked on the farm just like her brothers and sisters, milking cows before school, picking cotton and weeding the broomcorn fields, feeding the chickens and hogs. Most of the food they ate was what they grew.  Exel attended Merritt School for grades 1-12, graduating in 1933. When the bus couldn’t get through the snow, she and her brother Chet rode a horse. Her mother encouraged her to read at a very young age, which allowed her to skip 2nd grade. All these years she kept the watch her father gave her when she graduated from the 8th grade. She was the only student in her high school graduating class to go to college. She earned a degree in dietetics from Oklahoma University in 1937 with an internship at University of Michigan, where she met her future husband, Dr. Edward Becker Weinman from Steubenville, OH. They were married on October 8, 1938, in the First Presbyterian Church in Elk City, OK.  She was a member of Pi Zeta Kappa religious sorority and Omicron Nu national home economics sorority.  They lived in Steubenville all their married lives except during World War II, when they lived in Jackson, MS. Ed died in 1983. Exel moved to Boise, ID, in 2011 to be near her son Ed.  Exel is survived by her four children Edward Andrew Weinman (Sue) of Boise, ID, Robert Allender Weinman (Carolyn) of Ft. Worth, TX, Exel Lynne Wedul (Arvid) of Billings, MT and Marsha Gayle Whatley (Larry) of Houston, TX; grandchildren Jayne Exel (Randy) Wong and Edward Adam Weinman of Sacramento, CA, Robyn Suzanne (Ken) Betts of Riverton, UT, Jared Mark Weinman (Erin) of Yorba Linda, CA, Joseph Robert Weinman of Houston, TX, Jeffrey Michael Wedul (Hope) of Bismarck, ND, Daniel Arvid Wedul of Helena, MT, Lynne Exel Wedul of Seattle, WA, Thomas Mark (Vicki) Whatley of Rye, NY and Brian Matthew Whatley of Baltimore, MD; 15 great-grandchildren Avery Jayne Weinman; Aaron Lee, Kirstin Lee, Cori Lee and Steffi Lee Wong; Kaleb Aaron and Jocelyne Grace Elysabeth Betts; Isaac Reed, Maren Jennifer, Jonas Robert Weinman; Andrew Michael, Elisabeth Anne and James Terry Goldston; Thomas Mark Whatley III and Hudson Arvid Wedul.  Since 1964 she made sure the family got together either in her home for Thanksgiving or at a dude ranch or resort in Colorado, Idaho, Arkansas, Texas or Montana. For the last 20 years the reunions were held at Big Sky, Montana every summer.  In Steubenville, Exel was very active at Zion Church, teaching Sunday school and attending various committees including Friendship Circle. She made sure the whole family went to Sunday school and church every week, and she continued to do that until she moved away.  Exel helped many charities and held various offices in many of them. Her main focus for many years was the YWCA, where she was instrumental in getting the new building built in 1983-84. Other organizations included Laura E. McGowan Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons, Woman’s Club of Steubenville (especially the Garden Department), Friendship House, Jefferson County Medical Auxiliary, Ivy Twig and other bridge groups, Republican National Committee and Ohio Republican Party. Once she traveled to Honduras to help doctors serve people there. In addition to the many organizations she participated in, there were many people that helped her later in life. These people included Pete and Mary Barren, Fred Jones, Danny Spahn, and the Pastor Dr. Vaughn Foster.  Exel had one of the most beautiful yards in Steubenville, full of flowers that she shared with others by arranging and delivering bouquets. She enjoyed sharing her home by entertaining their many friends, often preparing an elegant meal. One of her favorite things to do was to feed the birds every morning and then watch the various types of birds eat while she stood at the window eating her breakfast.  For Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter she always made beautiful and delicious cookies that she generously shared with family and friends.  Exel always enjoyed music. She admits that in college she would go to the dances on Friday night and then be so tired on Saturday that she could hardly stay awake to study. She attended almost every concert and play presented in Steubenville for most of her years.  Friends may call at Dunlope - Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville on Friday 2 – 4 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Vaughn Foster officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery.  The family would like to thank the staff of Plantation Place and XL Hospice in Boise for the loving care they provided. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made the Steubenville YWCA.
