LIFELONG RESIDENT AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER ELEANOR WEISS DIES AT 102
Eleanor was born at the Ohio Valley Hospital of Steubenville on July 25, 1924, daughter of the late John C. and Agnes Milward Alexander. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur, whom she married August 26, 1949, and her brother, William Alexander.
After graduating from Steubenville High School, Class of 1942, she attended Boeheckers School of Business and during WWII, was first employed by Atlas Power and Light and later by the War Dept. at the Ravenna Arsenal as executive secretary.
A member of First Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and member of the Consolidation Committee when Westminster and First Presbyterian were merged. At First UP, she served as Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and was elected as the first ever female Clerk of Session. She sang in the choir for 60 years.
A past President of the Woman's Club of Steubenville, she was also member of the Garden and Fine Arts Departments and the Women's Club Chorus. She was a life member of the Club, active in many projects for 60 years, and also served as the Junior Women's Club Advisor.
In addition to those community activities, she was Past President of the Woman's Advisory Board of the Ohio Valley Hospital, and after the merger with St. John's, was an active member of the Trinity Health System and served as a hospital volunteer for 38 years.
Her favorite hobbies were writing poems for organizations and friends for special occasions, bridge, reading and golf.
Her greatest joy in life was her loving family. She is survived by daughter Susan Weiss Mulgrew (Brent) of Naples, FL, and three sons-
David (Jill) of Pickerington OH; William (Lora) of Dublin, OH; and Douglas (Claire) of Coraopolis, PA.
She also has nine cherished grandchildren- Brent Mulgrew, Los Angeles CA; Morgan Mulgrew, Erika Weiss and Nicole Weiss of Columbus, OH; Alex and Carlin Weiss of Pickerington, OH and Lucas and Carly Weiss of Coraopolis. She survives her youngest granddaughter Haley, also of Coraopolis. She has four great grandchildren.
Eleanor was fond of saying one of her greatest blessings in life was her many good friends.
A public viewing will be held at First Westminster Church starting at 10 am on Tuesday, August 25th. A brief ceremony will follow at noon. The burial will take place at Union Cemetery and is open to family only.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Westminster Presbyterian Church.
