Austin R. Woodard, 89, died of cancer at his home in Steubenville on 27 July 2009. He was born in West Hartford, CT and lived briefly in Tarentum, PA before moving to Steubenville in 1930 for the balance of his life. The son of John S. and Anne Stirling Woodard, he was preceded in death by them and also a brother, J. Russell of Macon, Georgia. He is survived by an older brother, Albert S. of Bryn Mawr, PA; his beloved wife Sarah G., with whom he was married 62 years; three sons Austin R. (Carol) and J. Thomas all of Madison, WI and William L. of Canton, OH; four grandchildren Jason Martin of Madison, WI and Heather, Elizabeth and Kristin Woodard of Canton, OH. A class of 1938 graduate of Steubenville High School, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in economics. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Basin for three years. Thereafter he worked for Follansbee Steel and the Weirton Steel retiring in 1983 with over 30 years of service in the industrial engineering department. A faithful member of First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville, he served in many roles including Deacon, Elder, Worship Committee and Treasurer. He served on the advisory board of JeffCo since its inception. Besides spending time with his family, his other interests included gardening, travel, history and music. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Rd., Wintersville, OH on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. Friends may also call on Thursday from 10:30a.m. until time of services 11a.m. at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 N. Fourth Street, Steubenville, OH with Rev. Robert Shearer officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Westminster Church, JeffCo Workshop or Charity Hospice, Inc. (264-2280)
