Obituary For Ann M. Bates

Ann Mastrangeli Miller Bates, 96, died peacefully in her sleep December 3, 2010. She was born in Wayland, Kentucky to Concetta and Alfred Mastrangeli. She spent most of her life in Columbus and Steubenville Ohio where she married George Geary Bates. She was a member of St. Peter’s Church and later St. Pius X Church. A placement specialist of the Steubenville Ohio State Employment office, she also served as Placement Director at the Franciscan University from 1960 to 1973. Her congenial spirit served her well both in her position there as well as in her sponsorship of Phi Epsilon Delta Sorority. Her love and her gastronomic expertise were her greatest gifts, and cooking with her was a delight she has passed own to her grandson, most notably her creation of Empire Biscuits. Ann is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Bates and Linda (John) Opfer; grandson Brooke (Sonia) Frischemeier; 2 great grandchildren  Yasmin and Lex Frischemeier; personal friend and companion William F. Sawyer. A Blessing ceremony will be held at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Rd, Wintersville, Ohio, on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 1:30p.m. with Msgr. George Yontz officiating. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.   Donations to her memory may be made to Franciscan University.

    I had the privilege of working with Anne at the Unemployment Office in Steubenville in 1960. What a joy she was and all these years later, I still remember her sense of humor and her tolerence of us "youngster" (at that time). God Bless Her.
