Alva Charles Carr of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on February 15, 2012 at the venerable age of 97. Alva was a beloved husband and father. He is survived by his loving daughter, Barbara E. Carr, M.D., and son-in-law, Jay C. Spies of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jean (Joy) Carr. Alva was born December 11, 1914, the youngest of four children to the late Charles and Teresa Carr in Buckhannon, WV. As a studious and intelligent young man, he graduated early from high school at age 16. He subsequently attended West Virginia Wesleyan for a teacher’s certificate. Alva was a decorated WWII veteran serving as a military police officer in Britain. He served in the North African, Sicilian-Naples and European campaigns. He was awarded a purple heart for injuries received in battle. After marrying the love of his life, Jean, he settled in Wintersville, Ohio. He was a well- respected foreman at National Steel, working there for 42 years. He was active in his church and community, serving many years as a volunteer fireman. Alva had a myriad of hobbies including deep sea fishing, gardening, golfing, and enjoying Pirate and Steeler games. He won many community awards for golfing including his prized “hole-in-one” trophy. But friends and family always came first with Alva Carr. Alva Charles Carr was an outstanding husband and father. He will be greatly mourned. Private services for the family held at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, Wintersville, OH on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 with internment to follow at Fort Steuben Burial Estates.
