Dr. Alan F. Zerla, 84, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away on November 18, 2024 at Trinity West Medical Center. Alan was born on December 13, 1939 in Wheeling, West Virginia a son of the late James & Stella Sokoll Zerla.
Alan was a 1957 graduate of Dillonvale High School. He earned his B.A. in Chemistry from the College of Steubenville aka Franciscan University of Steubenville, M.A. in Chemistry & Doctorate Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Peabody College aka Vanderbilt University. Alan worked as an Educator and School Principal with the Buckeye Local School District. Alan was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Phi Delta Kappa, Mensa, Mufon and the ACLU. He served on the Boards of S&J Federal Credit Union, Valley Hospice Inc. of Ohio and West Virginia, Way Memorial, American Cancer Society Jefferson Co. Chapter and the Steubenville Players.
Alan was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Anne Barata Zerla. He is survived by his longtime significant other Georgianna Aivaliotis; children Terrance (Christine Cervanek) Zerla, Wendy (Greg) Torres & Aimee (David) Rupert; siblings Frederick (late Helga) Zerla & Robert Lyle (late Connie) Zerla.
Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Thursday from 3 – 7 p.m. Vigil service at 6:45 p.m. Additional visitation on Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 852 Main Street, Wintersville, Ohio starting at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. with Fr. Michael Gossett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Alan’s name to the American Cancer Society or to Primetime Senior Services Attn. Transportation Department, 300 Lovers Lane, Steubenville, Ohio 43953.
